3 Dr.'s say 'stop'

by tigerpants, Aug 26, 2003 12:00AM
Hey everyone..I think by looking at some of the other posts that this week is a mixed bag of good vs bad news. Mine is bad. It came on very suddenly over  last day or so.
I spent all day monday at Hospital ER and most of today at Dr's and  blood labs.
My primary care Dr, My G.I. and  a immune specialist have all ordered me to stop treatment until further notice. They will decide in a month or so if I can  restart.
I have raging infection throughout my system..some bacterial and some viral. They thought at first it might be pneumonia ( sp ?)
but chest x-ray's showed clear. Have  major  lessions in throat, mouth and  sores on skin, that started yesterday morning. I can hardly talk or swallow.
Heart palpitations (sp) so am wearing a monitor thing . I go tomorrow to see more about med's to bring back my WBC..and further tests. They said my immune system has shut down.
They sent me home to keep me from contracting something at the hospital.  For now I am on  all sorts of med's to get this slowed down. So much going on that i don't fully understand  alot of it and I have severe brain fog..
Tonight would have been my 28th shot.  I hope I can get back on tx again.
Thanks for all the info gathered here and my best to all. I'll peak in and give a update now and then..

How did you find out that your immune system shut down? Why did you go to the er in the first place? I'm asking cause I have sores in my mouth and feel like ****. I hope and pray that you get better. It is better to stop for a while and wait for your body to recoup..

take good care of yourself; as we've seen in the couple of weeks, tx can become a background concern pretty fast. Sounds like you're in excellent hands, hopefully they'll be able to get that immune response on its feet again quickly.

Wow. I am so sorry to hear that you have had to stop treatment, but my completely unqualified non-medical opinion is that it is a really good thing that you have!

Take it easy. Keep drinking your fluids, and eat nourishing foods (if you can take then in). I hope as the medication flushes from your system that you do better and your immune system starts to rebuild.

Can't say enough about "Magic Mouthwash" for those sores. This stuff really works, and fast! Ask your Doc.

Hey April,
I'm very sorry to hear that you have to stop tx. I hope your symptoms clear soon and you can get back on track. I'm at the same stage as you (week 27) and dread the thought of crashing after coming this far.

Sending all my spare strength to you,
Andrew

Sorry to hear that you have to stop for now. There have been times on tx that I wished someone would tell me to stop but I know I would feel bad if they did. I woke up with raging mouth sores this morning and headed right to the "Magic Mouthwash" It has been a lifesaver for me. I hope your immune system kicks back into gear. I'll be thinking about you.

Tigerpants, I'm sorry about this set back. It's a blessing that you caught this before contracting something really bad. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. As always it's one day at a time. Good luck. Mike
Psychdoc, I must have missed this "Magic Mouthwash". What is it and where did you get it? I've been suffering with mouth sores for months with no idea what to do for it. I see my PCP tomorrow and if there is something that I can get I'd be very happy. Thanks. Mike

Mike, ask you Dr. for a prescription. This stuff is up to its name. It works like magic. I'm not sure of the contents, although I thought I read it in a post a while back. It looks like pepto bismol(sp?). When we pick up our initial load of drugs, this stuff should be part of the kit.

see 08/12 post on mouth sores.  There is some info there on magic mouthwash

You need Neupogen probably...it helps fight infection.  Call them today and discuss Neupogen.  Ribivarian can cause heart palpatation.  I had low potassium (part of the electrolyte panel) which too causes heart palpatation....all in my opinion.

Thanks you guys. I'll get right on it. Mine is not so much on my tongue but on the inside of my cheeks. I hope this stuff helps me. Mike

Mike, try some Biotene mouthwash and toothpaste. Any CVS or Walgreen's or large chain drug store would carry it-no prescription.  I got some a couple weeks ago and it helps with the dry, sore mouth and throat.

I've been using the Biotene mouthwash and toothpaste for 2 weeks now. It has really helped me with mouth and tongue tenderness. I didn't and haven't suffered with sores during treatment, just my mouth was so very tender.

Just a few days after using the biotene products, my mouth feels tons better. This stuff really worked wonders for me, and fast!

Raheem and someone else recommends Biotene, and now so do I.  Thanks again.!

by adavisirl, Aug 27, 2003 12:00AM
I've been using Biotene mouthwash twice daily since a few weeks into tx (I'm at week 27), and have had almost no dry-mouth problems or sores, etc. since.

magic mouthwash is a  combination of equal parts viscous lidocaine, benadryl and malox... the lidocaine is  usally prescription, but i wonder if you couldnt use a little numbzit or the stuff used for teething or a toothache.  so you could make your own brew at home...
best,

I saw my doctor yesterday and he gave me magic mouthwash, kenalog cream and nystatin for my mouth. He said if it doesn't clear up in a couple of weeks he wants to biosy the inside of my cheek. He also scheduled a colonoscopy so I have some real good times ahead. Thanks everyone for your help. Mike

Hi Mike, boy oh boy, just too much fun.. hang in there. I hope the sores resolve, sounds like they've been making your life pretty miserable lately.

by Hollismom, Aug 30, 2003 12:00AM
All I can say is the colonsoscopy procedure is smooth sailing, you sleep right through it! But, the prep is miserable...Keep smiling!
