About these sinus problems....

by nichi, Dec 02, 2002 12:00AM
OK. I called my GI about my bleeding nose and general sinus troubles and he said it is definitely not a side of treatment. I went to my GP and he said "wow" when he looked in my nose. ;)
He said I have bad allergies and I've been ignoring them. Ulcerations in my nose. Hmmm.
Prescribed cleansing w/ saline, Nasonex spray and Allegra.
10 days later my nose is still bloody. It's gotten a tiny bit better but only a tiny bit. I have a sinus headache all of the time. Normally in the fall I have allergy problems with a little blood once or twice during the season but never like this.

I've seen a handful of people on this board talking about sinus troubles. What have you experienced? What has your doc said about this being a side?
Peace, Nichola

hi, yes i have had some major sinus problems as well including some bleeding recently.  I have not been checked for allergies but I think they could possibly be the cause.  Just a ton of green/yellow mucous.  Do you know if this is a side effect of hepatitis because for some reason I feel as though I may have it.  Ive been takin patanase which was given to me by a ear nose and throat doctor and so far its been helping out my sinuses a little bit; howecer i still have some mucous and a cough

Seems like we're having a lot of "sinus problem" posts recently, and not surprising as this appears the start of the cold/allergy season, as opposed to the Hep C season, i.e. I do not think this is Hep C related, unless perhaps you're on treatment right now which can make these things worse. I'm having some sinus/mucous/throat/chest congestion problems myself lately, but it's cold/allergy related. Taking Sudafed Xtra Strenght  for the congestion and yesterday added some Allegra. Also, my ENT recommends rinsing your nasal passages daily with "JustSaline". Some get relief with NasalCrum or Nasonex. YMMV so listen to your doctor if he./she is a good one.

i had constantly something going on with my nose; i think what others get in the mouth, i had in my nose; quite anoying, but ialways felt, better in the nose than in the mouth; anway, saline solution calms down the inflamation (inflammation) quite a bit; remember the old guys sniffing oceanwater; in russia anyway; always thought that was weard, helps the nose though......good luck; babyoil was good too.....

The other thing nasal irrigation does is to help rid the nose of nasal irritants like dander, dust, etc. Going into clean air doesn't help if the nose is still gunked up with old irritants/allergens. In fact, off to the pharm in a bit for some Simply Saline
http://www.brucemedical.com/simsalspray.html  An alternative are Neti Pots, but make sure you use them correctly.

hey guys im new to this and was wondering if anyone can please help me because im freaking out right now.  How long does it usually take for you to notice symptoms of hepatitis.  I have had a bad cough and green mucous for about 5 months now and im not sure what it could be.  ive also noticed some itching on my body but nothing really severe.  I've also been a little more tired lately although it hasnt gotten to bad.  I guess im just not sure whether or not i should be worrying so much and how long it typically takes to see signs of it.  I was also wondering if hepatitis causes bad breathe?  thanks ahead of time for the help

I think this is related to tx.
we know riba drys out skin, but it also dries out the mucus membrane, and the lungs and throat, accounting for the Riba cough.

My head is much worse that in years past, every morning brings 20 or more hard sneezes, and lots of day with ache in the sinus/forhead behind ear areas.

I'm using the saline also, opting not to add any more drugs to the soup. I don't beleive I have a true infection, just a lot of dried out and over sensitive tissue. My skin sensitivity is still intense, (but I can wear clothes again, which for the first 3-4 wks I couldn't).

If you have any green mucus you have an infection, but as long as that is clear you are probably just reacting to the drugs. Sores in the mouth/gums/nose are part of what folks experience on SOC.

You should see a dentist and make sure you don't have lichens or other bacterium that can effect the whole area. This can be treated, and not treating can lead to serious gum and jaw infections. Dental health while on tx is VERY important.

I've not heard of the HCv causing bad breathe, but any gum infection will, so if you need a deep cleaning get it done.

Try blowing your nose more softly, one side at a time and you won't burst as many blood vessels this way. The nasonex has a backlash, in that it irritates any ulcerated tissue making it harder to heal, AND when it wears off you end up more stuffed up than before. Besides it is a drug. Look up the drug and you may decide to pass on it.

If your nose is really sore, even the saline may be too much, try just sniffing up a few drops of distilled water in that case. Also, try a humidifier. With running airconditioners and high summer heats nasal passages can get a real challenge keeping hydrated.

Try running the humidifier for a couple hours before bedtime, and you may find it brings more relief than other methods.
hope something helps.

I have turned into a mouth breather since on TX. It has dried me out all over. I get the worst cotton mouth ever. Like I have been left out in the desert. I wake up several times in the night because my mouth is so dry!
My vague understanding of the TX is that it attacks rapidly multiplying cells. This includes skin, mouth, throat, intestines and hair. On top of that with the anemia and low WBC I don't believe that we heal very well to replace damaged cells.

A cough with green mucous is not a symptom of Hepatitis C.   Green mucous usually means that you have an upper respiratory or sinus infection and that can certainly cause bad breath.

See your doctor before it gets worse.

"If you have any green mucus you have an infection, but as long as that is clear you are probably just reacting to the drugs."

WHAT DRUGS?????   Both people that complained of having green mucous haven't even been diagnosed with Hep C!!!

"I've not heard of the HCv causing bad breathe"

You just told them green mucous means they have an infection, remember?  And an infection would cause bad breath, right?

LOL....please....stay with the topic....LOL

"If your nose is really sore, even the saline may be too much, try just sniffing up a few drops of distilled water in that case"

When you have an infection, you're supposed to promote drainage, NOT sniff it up.  That's disgusting....LOL
