MO; HR mentioned in a post the other day to take the Alinia for 3 mos. after tx as well as the tapering.
Gauf; Hope you don't mind that I posted your Liver lover's diet from your page on the fibroscan thread. Thanks for putting this together!
Linda
Are you getting it from Mexico? Which pharmacy and how is it delivered?
Hey, most of ol' geezers put them in pill boxes, even if we aren't! On tx it was impossible for me to remember if I took them or not. Now that I am a really old geezer, I still can't remember, so I need a new box for the pills. Mine wore out on tx. LOL Haven't gotten my AARP card yet though!
Linda
I take the Alinia at the same time as the ribavirin. Apparently, both should be taken with food, and it just gets too complicated to keep that kind of schedule. I also have a hard time lately remembering even to take my meds, believe it or not. I've taken to putting them in a pill organizer like some old geezer. Damn it, where's my AARP card?
Hey, Good to hear ya. Hope you're holdin' up. jerry
HR told me that it only stays in the bloodstream a few hours after it is injested and does not build up.
Gauf told me there should be a few hours in between. I haven't started with SOC yet, but I am on Alinia and I was taking it 7am and 7pm. But now with tx right around the corner I don't want to be taking riba 10 pm in order to space it,,so little by little I am moving the Alinia by 15 minutes at a time.
Today I took it at 8 Am. I want to reach 10 am and then I can take the riba 7 am &7pm.
And the Alinia at 10 am and 10 pm.
Once I get a build up of riba in my system I can take it earlier in the afternoon.
Do you know if Alinia builds up in your system like Riba does? I don't know so I am making sure that I space it 12 hours apart to keep a steady even amount in my body. But it would be easier if I knew that it does build up cause then I wouldn't have to be so exact with the time.
Are you feeling better? I hope you are.
I too am currently taking Alinia with treatment and was wondering if you take it at the same time as your Ribavirin dosage or if you take it alone?
Just some info for those who wants to get Giardiasis to get Alinia as Tx,( of course I am joking) the news is that it is the same class of drugs as follows :Alinia (Nitazoxanide)=metronidazole=flagyl=, wich can be prescribed for cholecystitis , peptic ulcer dz, gynecologic issues, etc So may be insurance can cover if you find some other health related issues during the tx and get Alinia that way, BUT I am not sure if these drug are all the same efficacy as Alinia? . I hope it will help some how.

Thanks for the warm welcome. This place is a treasure trove of information. I posted a couple of times and got responses from jmjm530. Now there's a bright guy. Wonder if he could practice hepatology with an honorary M.D. I will bestow it on him next week. Then there will be Alinia for everyone!!!
Hi Jeff and welcome. So interesting that you went UND 2 weeks after starting the alinia. As you say, it could have been the riba increase - but the alinia didn't hurt either. The no-sides is extremely good news. I'd like to keep on hearing that.
Will look forward to your next post whenever that happens. I'm not going anywhere!

Cool! Can't wait to see your 6 mos post tx! Yeah, go Procrit! You sound like an intelligent guy. Nice to meet ya!
Linda
I'm on Alinia right now. I started on it at about week 21 out of 48. I have no side effects except for some really bitchin' yellow colored urine. I was UND at week 23. I have no idea if the Alinia helped in finally reaching UND because I also went from 1400 to 1600 of ribavirin. Go Procrit!!!
Guess we'll just have to see what happens. It's impossible to get a scientific result from whether people who post here end up SVR, but we can get a feel for the side effects and general tolerability.
I'll let everyone know at 24 weeks post Tx, assuming I'm not lost in revelry over being in a good mood, not short of breath or staring in the mirror at a full head of hair.
Jeff
That's great news - that you got rid of those pesky parasites and that the Alinia is not a big problem.
I am fine, almost back to normal at 6 months post meds.
Well, hope the tx plus the Alinia is your magic bullet this go round. I'll keep a look out for your progress. I hope there are more people come on who are doing SOC plus Alinia so that we can get a feel for what it can do. HR was very positive about the efficacy of Alinia.

Hey, just go to the mountains and drink out of a stream...lots of giardia in them waters! Some of the better Dr's that think out of the box that went to the conference this year are prescribing Alinia in addition to SOC. Hopefully, more and more will do this off label. It is a harmless drug, even babies can take it.
LL,,,,Awwh my parasites are gone. I would have saved ya some if I knew ya wanted some. Next time, maybe your birthday.
dointime, hi there!
I'm doing fine thanks. Alinia is no problem at all. I did mention that I do get a little bit of bone pain at night some time -while in bed, hip area the other night. Nothing like what SOC does, but it was there - no biggy though. Sometimes an hour after I take it I feel woozy. Tonight I didn't feel that at all. Urine is very bright at times. I guess the Alinia is doing that. But other than that, I really don't feel anything at all. I don't know if others that are on it say its easy too, cause SOC never bothered me either - breezed thru it last time and hopefully this time too except this time I hope I SVR.
How are you doing these days?
I hope all is well with you.
Thank you very much for asking about me. I appreciate your concern.

Hi myown
I was just wondering how you are getting on with the Alinia? Are you getting any sides?
Hope it's all going well,
dointime.
Doin....lol. I read your post (without the link) and said 'huh?? what? Than saw the next one!
MO...wow. Just saw all this. (trying to keep up with new things for Geno 1's, just to know). These critters may have been 'good' for you!
Can you send Missy some parasites :} ??
LL
Well, I learned something new today! Appreciate that, thanks. doin.
BID is an abbreviation for the Latin, "bis in die", which means twice daily dosing. The Alinia in the trial is administered 500mg twice daily, or 500mg BID.
Thanks for posting this info and for pointing out that all the dosing is the same. Very interesting that they seem to have settled on the formula - 4 weeks predosing with alinia then alinia + SOC for 48 weeks. It's great that the trial is for non-responders as that is so desperately needed.
I have not seen 'BID' used before to mean Alinia. How does that come about?
I'm really interested to see how you get on with alinia and I hope the sides are as minimal as rumoured. Please keep us posted,
Good luck,
dointime
Thanks for the Romark link, but it appears that for the Phase II STEALTH-C trials with Alinia the dosing is all the same. 500mg BID for 4 weeks, then 500mg BID plus SOC for 48 weeks.
I am in screening for this trial -- the Alinia dosing is all the same. They are looking for 1 log drop in viral load (from baseline) by week 4 of SOC, and 2 log drop (from baseline) by week 12, and Undetectable (to <50) by week 24. If all of those criteria are met, the SOC + study drug continues for a total of 48 weeks, with a 24 week followup.
I will have to look at it, but not tonight! I may have bad dreams about bugs. lol
Check this out when you get time - talks about how the parasite can effect the mind. I believe that. I don't know if all parasites can - but I wouldn't doubt it. Also if you hit on "manipulative parasites" in the beginning of article and scroll down a little - they have an unbelievable video. I found it interesting - but if you get the heebee jeebies don't watch it and don't read the article, but I think anyone that owns a cat should IMO. Also Carl Zimmers article is interesting too. Halfway down the article it tells you how it can infect/and affect humans - not just thru cat feces, but under cooked meat- scary, but its something we all should know and also to make sure we eat meat that is medium to well done - no more med-rare for me.
