Another Marijuana Question

Does anyone know if eating marijuana is easier on your liver than smoking it?

I thought I remembered someone posting how the smoke was the most damaging part.

i too smoke the evil weed--if it's the only thing that helps with the nausea and apetite then i'm all for it although i haven't spoken with the doc about it yet---i am new to all of this and i just got the genotype and vl--2b-1,580,000--i guess the biopsy is next--but let me ask another question--what does snorting cocaine have to do with hep c--my doc asked about that on first consult--i don't understand and i forget to ask him and now alot of my friends are a little worried--

sure you can. some recommend it over taking pills. it must be your facility and it's rules. they only treat those not using "elicit drugs" and they include MJ in that category. Is it Kaiser? I think I remember you saying it was. Private doctors make their own rules on it, in CA it is legal for medicinal use. I go to pretty straight laced doctors and both mentioned using it for control of nausea on tx and one said it worked for pain. I have always thought Hmmmm over your docs position on it but it is probably Kaiser's position.

I just ditto every word you said above except I am taking ADs.  I don't think they would ever help me quit smoking though LOL

I used to always say I LOVED smoking so it would be hard to quit but lately I HATE it and still can't seem to.  Addiction.

Just finding out lately that the B*stards have UPPED the amount of addictive additives by 30%!!! freaked me out and helped me to understand why it's so much HARDER now than it used to be.

We missed the boat...

But we can always take a canoe!

I never heard about upping the additives, but it makes sense I suppose.  How else are they going to pay all those coourt settlements?

A canoe works for me, but whose going to bring the paddle?  Sounds like we both may have lost ours <G>.

I just saw a psychiatrist for a prescription for an AD.  After I told her that I'd had a good experience once upon a time with Wellbutrin, she looked it up in her book.  "Oh, it's hepatotoxic," says she.  Then she looks up other ADs.  It appears that they're all hepatotoxic, so -- based upon my hepatologist's recommendation that I get on an AD prior to beginning tx -- she did prescribe the Wellbutrin.

So it seems that they allow some hepatotoxic drugs despite their poisonous qualities, in which case why not pot??  Can't we choose our poisons?

C'mon mon - in the interest of info exchange.

I think it was you I remembered mentioning something about the evils of smoking it.  I'm interested in your theory on this and if it's based in fact or not.

Anyone interested in quitting smoking cigs please take my advice.  I started smoking when I was 8, was up to a pack a day by 13 and quit at 36 in 2001, so smoking was a way of life for me.  I grew up incorporating smoking into everything from eating to how I dealt with stress, so believe me when I say it was as hard for me as anyone.

The way to do it is with the patch.  I tried the patch in the past but wasnt successful until I followed the 5 important factors to success.

1. Don't run out, even for a day.  Keep your supply full.  You will be successful if you follow these steps so buy half of the supply at a time and buy your second half with plenty of time to spare.

2. Do the whole course through, if it says 6-8 weeks, stay on the whole 8.  Give yourself a break, you deserve to have all the help you can get, even if you dont think you need it.

3. At each step down in patch strength, expect a rough few days to a week.  During this time you'll be a bit irratiable but it's nothing nearly as bad as cold turkey.  When you get to the end and quit using the patches, you'll have another tough spell but again, it's much more managable than cold turkey and the nice part is, it goes away just like when you dropped a step in strength.

4. Expect to have a tough year.  Not a pretty prospect but you need to be realistic and think about the lifelong benefits. You'll be learning how to deal with life all over again without smokes.  You'll have to learn to take deep breaths and walks when stress hits.  You'll have to learn what to do with your hands.  You'll have to figure out a way to deal with the added weight you gain because you're eating more(exersise).  This is tough stuff.  The good news is that these things do get better in time, for me I didn't really feel "normal" again for about a year, the point is I did get over it even after smoking most of my life.

5. Don't slip, even once.  Sure I get the urge once in awhile but I know that if I have that one it could lead to smoking again and knowing how hard it was to quit, I don't want to go through that again.

Ok - I'm off my soap box for now but PLEASE share this with whomever you want.  I try to tell anyone I hear who wants to quit because it feels hopeless and people need to know, there is a way.

whatever i've read about marijuana seems to suggest that its not toxic to the liver.  but it does affect the central nervous system.

i had a bad experience with a marjuana overdose by ingestion. i boiled it in full cream milk to release THC. i used cannabis sativa.

ended up in the emergency room.  had CNS convulsions for a week after that.  strange indigestion and GERD followed for six months, led me to quit smoking instead :)

When I was suffering early in treatment from nausea and appetite problems, my hepatologist suggested medical marijuana. It has been used with Chemo and HIV patients for some time. Here's a recent article that suggests medical marijuna can enhance treatment outcomes by helping people stay on treatment longer:

http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=1180

I assume the same is true for regular marijuana putting aside the legal and quality control issues. From the little I remember of the 60's, ingesting marijuana (as in brownies, etc) enhances its potency and I'm not sure if this is good or bad. I certainly wouldn't get hung up about sucking it into my lungs for the year or so of treament unless you had some pulmonary issues.

Unfortunatly, marijuana doesn't agree with me so I never took it during treatment. Too bad, because as side effects go, nausea has to be one of the worst, if not the worst.

I'm going to say that again. Nausea has to be one of the nastiest side effects of combo treatment. I was able to handle all the other sh*t but if my nausea had continued another month I have no doubt I would have been forced to quit. Fortunatly, nausea tends to ease up and eventually disappear later in treatment. I certainly can understand why people drop out or dose reduce due to nausea. If medical marijuana can help, by all means consider it.

I hear ya there girl.  I'm hoping to can the cigs soon, but they've been the only thing which has kept me somewhat sane for the last 10 months of this friggin roller coaster tx w/o ADs I've been riding.

I'm just thankful I put all the other vices behind me before I found out and started tx'ing this insidious disease.

I don't think it matters one little bit except its saving your lungs the aggravation and damage.

Your liver processes out toxins and well...if you think of the amount of toxins in pot you take your own risks and make your own choices. (PS I smoke cigs so I am NOT one to talk...however I did quit drinking/drugging the cigs just have not gone - too hard!)

Electric brownies.  I doubt that it matters how the drug is obtained.  I would venture a guess that it is the processing of the THC which affects the liver and the manner at which it enters into the blood stream would not matter except to affect how quickly it enters.
