Anti_HCV Test Results

Hi, I am goign through retesting after testing positve for HCV months ago. 2 tests show undetectable viral load, so they coudl not do genotype. I was referred to a specialist and I got copies of the test results a month before my appointment to review the results. Two tests stand out, but I am uclear as to what they mean. Is anyone familiar with these? All liver functions normal on other tests.
HCV AB     11.0 High S/CO Ratio    0.0-0.9
Test            Normal            Abnormal           Reference
Anti-HCV                           Positive A            Negative
What does "Positive A" mean, but why would it have Negative under reference. I assume that the HCV AB test cofirmed my exposure to HCV from the original test.
THanks for looking at this.

Hi there,

I can’t comment on the meaning of ‘positive A’; but I’m not sure it’s even relevant.

The really good news is that you’ve tested negative for active RNA virus using serial PCR testing; that test is *extremely* specific for infection.

The ‘negative’ under reference range simply means that an ordinary result would be negative; vs. your positive result.

Apparently, your own immune response has defeated the virus; leaving you antibody positive, RNA negative. This occurs in roughly 20% of patients during the acute phase (initial six months) of infection.

Seriously good news!

It’s also good that the doctor continued to test for active virus for a while; one of the hallmarks of acute infection is intermittent viremia; this period can last for several months.

A hearty congratulations—

Bill

I was thinking the very things Bill is saying while reading your post. Your body seems to have won the battle. This is great news for you!

Not many clear the virus without treatment.  you are one of the lucky few.

You will be antibody pos for a LONG time, maybe the rest of your life, but this is NOT

a health problem.  Some people lose the antibody after several decades.

This is GOOD news for you.  Remember, clearing Hcv once does NOT give you

immunity from re infection.  Hcv is not like measles and mumps.
