Any thought on the below scenario?

My son recently had a blood test and tested reactive to hep c. With the same blood ample they immediately did the RNA secondary test  and came up not detected. Being that is was the same blood sample, I would think this a false positive.

I agree that is what Mom's do. I'm happy for your son. It is very confusing however I am happy to hear he doesn't have HCV.
Good luck!

Thanks again so much for the answer. It's very confusing. And I was told by a doctor that if it is false positive, the antibodies won't show again. It's enough to make your head spin. Thanks again.

Well that may be true or it still may stay positive depending on the reason for the positive antibody test result but the important thing is he doesn't have hep c as evidenced by his not detected HCV RNA test

That is a possibility or that he was exposed in the past but was able to beat the virus on his own about 25% of people are able to do so. The important thing is the test for the hep c virus itself the HCV RNA by PCR test was not detected so he is not currently infected.

However, he will always test positive for antibodies to the hep c virus.

Thanks for the answer. But wouldn't the blood have to be redrawn and his body have a chance to clear the virus? This was from same blood sample done at exactly the same time.
Antibodies to the hepatitis C virus are not virus itself they are made by your body when they come in contact with hepatitis C virus . They ran a separate separate test that looks for the hepatitis C virus itself called the HCV RNA by PCR test.

If the sample was of sufficient size they should be able to use the same sample to perform the test .  I am just a layperson for a better answer you can discuss this with your doctor.

As far as I am aware he should not require any additional testing. Assuming they did infact test him for the virus with the HCV RNA test
Just to add if he tested positive for antibodies even if not positive for the virus he will forever test positive for antibodies
