Anyone tried Buprenex to help get through treatment?

by mofo, Aug 02, 2003 12:00AM
I haven't been able to get any help from ad's. My first go around with treatment was very difficult and after 6 weeks, had to stop.  I'm now faced with having to start again. I want to get this over with, and I want to be able to stay the course. It's been suggested that I consider taking Buprenex during treatment. Has anyone tried this? Thank you!  Jon

I am in the same boat that you are in. I started tx and had to stop because wbc was so low. I just had my 1st shot last night of Pegasys at half strength and am only having mild chills and a headache. That is a world of difference from the Peg-Intron and Rebitol. I take half the Copegus also.
So what is Buprenex and what does it do? I needed Neupogen before and couldn't get it, so anything that might keep my blood count up would be a blessing.
And also, my husband did 6 months of tx and couldn't take anymore so he took himself off. I wish he had finished, but he had a low viral count and is type 2b.
Let me know how you do cause I'm on the same track that you are
Thanks

it is metabolized by the liver. what is the desired effect for you?  i just scanned the info and isn't it a painkiller? lynn

by mofo, Aug 02, 2003 12:00AM
Yes, as far as I can tell, it's primary use is a painkiller. There has been recent discussion about it's use as an ad in cases where the usual suspects don't work.

It is an opioid-like pain killer (morphine-like) and I have never seen it used in treatment of side effects.

Erin, There are recent studies showing its use as an AD with respect to treatment for HCV. I'm aware that it is an Opoid-like product, and for someone with an addiction history, this is not a direction I head in, lightly. As this is new information, I was curious if anyone had been down this path yet. I have one objective at this time, and that is to successfully complete treatment. If the only way to reach that goal involves "kicking" buprenex, then I say, so be it. I'm not fond of this idea, but for some reason, I don't get any help from the regular batch of AD's. I appreciate your feedback, and am wondering if anyone else out there is in the same situation as me? If so, what did you do? Thanks, Jon

Mofo,

Ultram has been a help for me.  I'm not suggesting this for anyone else, so, please people, don't go attacking me or accusing me of bad advice!   But, FOR ME, Ultram has helped.

Susan, I tried Ultram recently and had to quit because after about 3 days it started making me jittery. The doc explained to me that was sometimes the side-effect of this drug because it was a narcotic drug but that was not addicting. He said it altered the mind to "think" iw was not in pain. It worked WONDERFUL for the arthritis in my elbow tho...haha!

Ask your doc about amtriptyline. Have you tried it?

It not only allows me to keep some weight on during treatment but I understand that it is used as a pain blocker.

Some people on this forum have commented that the amtriptyline leaves you waking up too groogy the next day but it has worked very well for me.

I am on a low dose of 50mg daily.

I wish I could answer you, but can't.  I'm not on your meds so simply don't know your answer.  BUT ... You might try posting your question on the top thread available since no new post for today are allowed yet.  I'm worried nobody that can help you will see this all the way down here until later.  If me, I would jump on and post to the top thread availablbe and in the Comment to: block I'd type "HELP, New Question".  Sorry you're hurting.  God Bless.  Pattie
