Apoptosis vs. Necrosis

Apoptosis vs. Necrosis

Is there an inherent difference between a bx that identifies apoptosis or a bx that identifies necrosis.  Would there be a factor that causes apoptosis vs. a factor that causes necrosis in a Hep C patient?  My husband's bx identified apoptosis (which in layman's term is cells committing suicide I think).

I think that apoptosis is more of a natural sluffing off and necrosis is from some severe problem like infection or the  inflammation and scarring that is caused by the hepatitis C virons.
