Are nosebleeds a sx of tx?

My husband has been on treatment for 8 weeks and had a nosebleed for no apparent reason this morning. I hadn't heard anything about nosebleeds being a sx. Has anyone experienced this?

during tx. many of us have sinus problems. most complain of dryness due to tx. drugs. this may be cause of husbands nosebleeds. this dryness affects the mouth also so important to drink a lot of fluids to keep everything moist.

i had sinus discharge for weeks and not real nosebleeds perse but, more like annoying bloody mucus plugs in my nasal passages.  i found saline washes to be real helpful, first tried packaged type saline spray. personally didn't really like the smell of it it smells funny like from a preservative of something. some people talk about using netti pot try to google you'll see what it is.

instead i just used technique i saw on yoga program xx yrs ago.. warm water in palm of hand add few grains of salt, mix it up a little to dissolve carefully sniff it back have to be careful doesn't go to ears,or you'll have ear infection.  let drain forward out again, as get more practiced and comfortable sniffing salt water, can let go further back and down back of throat. even more advanced ways to do if you read different links about using netti pot, you will see how other ways of doing.

hope this helps.

Yes, I had nosebleeds during PEG-IFN/riba treatment.  Go to the pharmacy/grocery store and get a saline nose spray, which is an aerosol mist in a squeeze bottle.  It is over-the-counter.  The brand name is Ocean, but there are also store brands.  This can be used as needed.  It really helped me, although I still had an occassional bleed.

This SX caught me by surprise too.

Was working on a school project with my son this past weekend. He said 'hey Dad, you're nose is bleeding'.  Hasn't happened in a long time, but was not concerned about it.  Weather has been fairly dry, low humidity and platelets are at a low point for me.  I'm not concerned about it (except the blood part).  And no, there was no pre-bleed pickin' involved.

glad there was no pickin involved or we would have had to have the nose picken police get you.  (that's a left coast thing, we like to legislate everything).

hope your doing well.

nose bleeds a sign of low platelets which can happen with HCV treating or not treating.

I had heavy nosebleeds the first couple of weeks of TX.

They stopped after the Dr. prescribe twice monthly neupogen.

When I get a nose bleed it takes a very long time to clot, compared to before tx.

If you're talking about a spontaneous nose bleed (one that just happens out of the blue and doesn't stop bleeding easily)  as opposed to an insignificant nose bleed (one that stops bleeding quickly or comes on from blowing your nose too hard, or one that comes on between your nose is too dry)  yes - it could most assuredly be from treatment. Hep C treatment typically causes a drop in platelets which in turn can cause bleeding tendencies and poor clotting ability.  If his nose won't stop bleeding or if he is having profuse nose bleeds, be careful about flushes because those could interfere further with his clotting ability. Make sure the doc is watching his platelets.  Best of luck.

I started getting nose bleeds right before my platelets dropped really low. Platelets came up and the nose bleeds stopped. The nose bleeds in themselves are not a problem.

Unfortunately it is one of the problems.

Also, Tell your hubby to start drinking a LOT of water - we tend to get VERY dehydrated with these meds (I personally had not the nosebleeds but my tongue actually cracked at one point my mouth/nasal passages were so dried out).

Remember that caffeine and so coffee, soda etc. can be very dehydrating so that doesn't count in the number of oz a day he should be having.

Good luck!

wow, because i never had the nosebleed thing i didn't realize that it was one of the problems we could get (though unlike the post-treat probs. its probably one that we are informed of before we treat).
