This post is over 7 years old. I think the OP and other responders may no longer be active on this forum.

type 1 is more common, less severe and can affect men and women equally.  it usually occurs in adulthood.

Type 2 is less common, more severe and typically effects young girls

but...my two year old son was diagnosed at 1 1/2 year old after and his symptoms showed up at about 7 months of age....so boys can get it.

His treatment was the same.  Prednisone, then they added immuran and weaned off of the prednisone.

My 2 year old son has Autoimmune hepatitis type 2. he was diagnosed at 1 1/2.  He started on prednisone alone, he is currently on both Prednisone and Immuran but they are lowering his prednisone to wean him off.  How is it going for your daughter on just the immuran?

Yes, they can have flare ups at any time...no matter how long they are in remission.

I believe AIH to reoccur 70% of the time. Regardless you'll want her to have LFT tests a couple of times a year during remission. Also continue to eat health!

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2?  I was diagnosed in 2004, but the doctors believe I have had it for 7yrs+ and I am only 27! I too took Prednisone and Imuran but now am only on Imuran.  I gained weight and mood swings big time.  I also have Lupus.  Even with Imuran though my main symptom is being tired and having no energy.  hope this helps.

Hi there,

I have had AIH for over 10 years. I took Prednisone for a number of years slowly reducing the dosage till around 2000 when I stopped completely. Early side effects for me were mainly weight gain. Some tell me I have mood swings but hey doesn't everyone! I also had complications when a liver biopsy ruptured my liver but that's another story!

In 2002 it came back again (it apparently does in 70% of cases) and I have been taking both prednisone and immuran now. We are considering stopping the Prednisone soon and just staying on immuran. I don't seem to have any side-effects at present. It's just important to have regular check up with your GP, eat healthy and do regular exercise. Stay away front fatty fried foods and alcohol.

Hi  I have AIH and what Rev said is true.  I was treated with prednisone and imuran. Am now on imuran alone. I am considered to be in remission.  I was dx in June 04. This is a long term disease, as I'm sure you have been told, it is controlable, but not cureable.  I feel good most of the time, with AIH there can be other auto immune stuff that tags along. I have arthritis and osteopenia. I feel so much better that 2 years ago, I am not back to pre AIH energy levels, but I can live with the new me.
Take care
Maari

Everyone has a auto imune that means if you had low sugar level that it could make it run high during treatment,or if you had depression it could get worse. Know what you auto immune are before treatment not the way i have had to do it
