Autoimmune Hepatitis

by Beauford Toney, May 16, 2000 12:00AM
My son was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis last summer.
The biopsy indicated some liver damage. He was put on imuran and predinsone (I think 100mg imuran, 40 or 50 mg predinsone). His liver function responded to these drugs, but numbers were not normal (blood tests). Close but not there. When he was taken off predinsone (gradually 5mg per week) the blood test numbers began to rise. The doctor doesn't think that imurn will work alone without predimsone. What other drugs are there? I have read about doctors that treat with herbal therapy, posting good results? Any truth to this? My main concern is getting something that will help him. What sort of life do people live with this disease? He is only 20 and I am worried about his future.
