Autoimmune Hepatits, Pregnancy and Imuran

by SAsencio, Apr 15, 2005 12:00AM
My girlfriend suffers from active Automimmunce Hepatitis and takes 75mg of Imuran daily. We just received news a few days ago that she is pregnant; three to four weeks along.

We have looked into the possible problems she may face to bring our child to term. We (and especially she) would love to bring this baby to term, as it has always been her dream to be a mother. She is 36 and I am 35. So this may be our last chance at parenthood.

We understand that Imuran is rated D on the "risk" scale but cannot find much information on the success rates of bringing a child to term healthy, with AIH or with any other defect. Her liver doctor has stated to us that he hasn't found much information either and we now have her OB/GYN looking into it as well. This is our effort to try and find even more information or hear from anyone who has successfully or unsuccessfully had an AIH & Imuran pregnancy. Any help would be greatly appreciated and we sincerely thank you for your time and effort to help us.

I have AIH and am on Imuran. The information I have read does not recommend the drug without careful assesment of risk versus benefit.  I would reccommend that you ask your question at this site www.AutoImmuneHepatitis.co.uk  This group has a lot of members who have had AIH for 20+ years.

I'll keep you two in my prayers. Keep asking questions and doing your own research.  I have found that it is important to be well informed when you have a rather rare disorder.

Hi Scott

I have been following your posts. So, they have finally given you the AIH dx?  I don't know what to say.  You sure have recieved more that you share of liver ailments.

I don't have lupus, thats good.  I do have oesteoarthritis and my joint pain according to 3 docs is from AIH.  Hope you don't get that part of this.  At least they are letting me take something stronger that tylenol.  I have some good days and some not so good.

Take care

M.

Just to update...

My girlfriend and the baby are doing well (minus the normal nausea accompanied with being pregnant)...

This is what her liver doctor, ob/gyn and the hospital geneticist came up with...

They have taken her off of the 75mg of Imuran she was taking and placed her on 20mg of Prednisone... Every 2 weeks she will be checked for any changes in her liver or with the baby... Her first checkup is next week...

Little note to the significant others of those in this situation... Prednisone definately makes a person more on edge mix that with just being pregnant and it can feel like they are PMSing every day... Just remember to be patient, loving and most of all honest when you have had enough and need to "take a walk"... Remember as I do... Nine months of this for a lifetime of being a parent seems totally worth it :)

Thank you for your well wishes and prayers... We hope that all of yours along with our families and friends will be bring us the joy of parenting a healthy baby...

I will keep this topic updated every so often...

Thanks again!!!

That is good news,  I'm glad to hear the doctors caring for your girlfriend and child have a plan.

From what you have writen I know you will be supportive.  Pregnancy is rough without extra concerns.

Goodluck

I too am on Imuran. I have been for several years now. I found out this past Friday that I am 5 and a half weeks pregnant. I am horrible at taking my med's,  so I actually have't taken the Imuran in 1 week. I talked to my liver doc today and he said to continue the med's at the same doseage. I will ask my ob/gyn what she thinks @ our first visit next week. I don't know what to do. I am praying about it and sure I will receive an answer. This is difficult. I feel I should listen to my doc, but I have read not so good things on the internet about taking Imuran during pregnancy and I'm worried. I know your girlfriend was taken off it and placed on Prednisone...I wonder if I should ask about possibly doing that....

Kenita - this post is over 2 years old... So I don't know about the conclusion of it.

But you answer is awesome.

Good luck with your pregnancy too!
