I AM ALSO TYPE1A.. I AM INTO WEEK 7 OF TX. THE DOCTOR SAID THAT I WOULDNT BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF MY BABY, AND WAS NOT SURE IF I WOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP MY JOB.. I HAVE ONLY HAD TO CALL OFF WORK 1 TIME AND AS A SINGLE MOTHER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CARE FOR MY KIDS. I HONESTLY FEEL LIKE OUR SUCCESS COMES FROM THE ATTITUDE WE HAVE.. IF WE SIT AROUND AND SULK IN OUR ILLNESS AND FEEL SORRY FOR OURSELVES, THE SIDE EFFECTS WILL BE WORSE. FOR ME, I WILL WAKE UP IN THE A.M. AND DECIDE THAT I WILL PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER, AND MAKE IT THROUGH..

WHATS YOUR VIRAL LOAD??

This is my first time on this site. I am fighting with myself about starting the treatment for HEpC, as it is called.

I went for a phyiscal last year in October and found out that I had HepC....I was so taken back by it and still fighting what I need to do about it.

I live in Chicago and been going down to Northwestern Hospital for test. And they said I have Type1 and that "maybe the medicine will work?

And the side effects are terrible and etc...

Any advise and still fighting with myself

Lost in thought in Chicago.

1 WEEK BEFORE I STARTED TREARMENT, I CAME DOWN WITH A COLD, COUGH, CONGESTION. 7 WEEKS LATER, I AM STILL COUGHING UP ****... I DO BELIEVE I AM ALSO GOING TO ASK MY DOCTOR ABOUT WELBUTRIN. MY DR WANTED ME TO GO ON PROZAC B4 TX, HOWEVER, I CHOOSE NOT TO. HAD A FRIEND SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT WENT ON THAT, MADE HER MORE DEPRESSED, AND SHE KILLED HERSELF. ANYONE HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT WELLBUTRIN CAUSING DEPRESSION??

As you know, hepc drugs cause reduced red blood cells and anemia. This is very difficult for your heart because it is working extra hard to deliver the oxygen needed for your body and brain to function. It is better to not smoke during tx. As an x-smoker myself, I know it is difficult. If you continue to smoke, monitor your heart closly. Good luck with tx. I had very few sx up to about week 26. Then about week 36, my dr finally found the right combo of helper drugs.

After smoking for 30+ years, I'm in the process of quitting during tx. Sound crazy?? Here's why:

- Given I'm feeling like **** anyway, its hard to see how quitting can make me feel much worse.

- I'm taking Wellbutrin to take the edge off the coaster ride, and it turns out that Wellbutrin is specifically prescribed to ease the strain of quitting.

- I'm generally being such a miserable sob that its good to be getting some instant gratification out of the tx experience :-)

YMMV, of course.

LOL during most of this course of treatment the riba rage at first was so BAD that people wanted to kill me anyway, you're RIGHT I should have just done it back then!

You are one SMART cookie - why if they are already going to be pissed at us...why not?

I wish you ALLLLLL of the best.  It's so hard it's just unbelievable.

Now...it's after my lunch here at work and you know exactly what I want to go do?  Yup. Smoke.

I guess I've been smoking 30 years too and should take your example.  For sure.

Im just wondering what your process of quitting is. How much Wellbutrin are you taking? Is it helping? Did you stop cigs completely or cut down? Are you using the patch?

I thought the info might be helpful to those who are trying to quit if you don't mind sharing it.

I quit smoking on tx and I was successful for some time but have slipped lately, maybe I should try that Wellbutrin but I have heard horrible things about the side effects of it, have you had any bad ones?

Sindog; you are absolutely right. Smokers typically have around 30% of their haemaoglobin bound with carbon monoxide [HGB has a much stronger tendency to bond with carbon monoxide than with oxygen. Given we are all running a little low on HGB, then freeing up an extra 30% of the little we have should help.

Kalio; I taking 300mg Wellbutrin XL, which is a one/day time release formulation. It really works for me, with no sides that rise above the fun little collection of entertaining sides from TX. I've taken Wellbutrin before, maybe 7 years ago, and don't remember any sides from then either.

It really reduces the cravings. I ran a pack a day. First hit was immediately on waking - before anything else. The craving still come, but they are nothing like the gut wrenching 'would kill for a smoke' that they were. Fairly mild, and easy to blow off. I'm tapering down. First week got it down to around four/day. Now down to maybe two/day. Next week its done!

nygirl; We're nasty, bitchin characters and we already look like stiffs. Anyone who expects sweetness and light from us is in trouble.

Have many of you developed that nagging cough since starting tx?

I smoke too, but with this cough I've got now...I NEED to quit.

Thanks a lot for the info. I will speak to my doctor and see if I can get some Wellbutrin to help me stay the course. Let us know what the docs say about your skin thing if you can.

Unfortunately, I still smoke too even though I KNOW it's not good for me in any respect.  I didn't want to even try to quit when I had just started treatment and my doctor told me to really not worry right THEN because I had enough on my plate.

Now I am on week 56 of 72 and I've used up EVERY excuse that I possibly can and I really have to.

I'm thinking about going on the patch again - for a short two week therapy to help me get over it.

It's not easy.  I quit drinking and drugging but smoking...it's just so HARD.

I just wanted you to know you certainly aren't alone. In life we do the best we can do...but sometimes we have to admit we sure aren''t perfect!

Best luck with treatment. You sound like you are doing really well and let's pray the rest of it goes as easily.

Make sure you are getting constant CBCs to monitor your blood and especially hemo. It can go south VERY fast...and if that happens it ain't pretty and you will want to get on Procrit or Epogen FAST abecause it takes a few weeks to work.

DONT let them reduce your meds no matter WHAT that can seriously jeopardize your success!

they should not consider discontinuing tx because of low hgb, that is not the first action taken.  a good dr will use rescue drugs like Procrit to increase it, before considering lowering doses, not stopping tx.  any mention of ending tx should be met with a WHY.  It looks good so far for you.
on with the fight!

You should try to quit smoking. I quit after 8 years. I was down to 4 cigs a day when I quit. I bought a new couch with the money I would have spent on cigs. It was a very nice couch with a bed in it for company. I took up chewing gum, but eventually got rid of that habit also.

You will not get enough oxygen with smoking. That will make you tired. I don't know all the things it can do to your heart. Ask your doctor.

Best wishes giving up that tobacco habit. Food will taste so much better afterwards.
