OH boy my teeth bleed all of the time.  Not so nice huh?

Teeth problems are a huge side effect from treatment, the medications really play some number on them over time and dentistry is important because of risk of infection.  Also...our mouths are so dry that the bacteria really is just sitting in there so we have to be careful of that too.

I am sure someone will explain it better but...it's VERY common and almost expected so don't worry!

It's a good thing that your are doing for your Dad.  Since he's going through treatment, and hopefully making progress, it may be a good idea to get him new toothbrushes along the way.  He'll want to avoid the possibility of re-infecting himself with mirco droplets of blood that may remain on his toothbrush.  Good luck to you both.

As I posted yesterday - I was prescribed <a href="http://www.tiscali.co.uk/lifestyle/healthfitness/health_advice/netdoctor/archive/100004564.html">Chlorhexidine Mouthwash</a> for use on tx. Seems to help.

Just so I have this straight...you use chlorhexidine orally?

Orally!?!

No. It says to rinse liberally, ensuring contact with left and right inner cheeks, so that's what I do. There is a warning about avoiding contact with lips, but I'm a lot smarter than I look - I knew that was just for the girlz....

I have to disagree with you that bleeding is to be expected and that it's no big thing. Bleeding gums is either an idication of gum disease or a problem with coagulation like a vitamin k deficiency or from blood thinner meds like coumadina and the like. I took this stuff for over 3 years and never had any bleeding. I saw my dentist every 3 months for cleanings and checks. I have never read that bleeding gums is to be expected from TX and most of the people that I have known whose gums bled and didn't seek attention for it ended up having gum sugery. I'd see a good dentist or periodontist fast if my gums were bleeding. Mike

I think dental problems in general are to be expected but you are right about the bleeding - just because I've got it now doesn't mean it's normal.
Most likely it's a cause of all of the YEARS I ignored my teeth...and after going to the dentist last month and finding out I need a minimum of three root canals and have over 20 cavities - what am I DOING talking about dentistry!

You are right!

I expect you to get right on those chompers and get everything straightened out fast! I know too well how things can get away from us so don't feel bad. I wish you luck on the dental stuff and everything else too. Mike
