Bleeding after liver biopsy?

Bleeding after liver biopsy?

I don't know if this is the right forum or not, but it's the middle of the night and I don't know where else to go ...

My dad had a liver biopsy today, checking to see if his recently diagnosed hemochromatosis has damaged his liver. Evidently he's had some bleeding problems, and is back in the hospital being treated for that.  I know very little about all of this - how serious a complication is it?   All I can find online is that bleeding is a "very rare" complication from a liver biopsy, but also the "most serious."   I'm not sure I'll sleep tonight - for all I know, he's in surgery or something right this minute ...

I am sorry I can't help you with information about the biopsy. I thought I would reply because nobody else has responded to you yet. They usually will eventually.

At least if there is anything really serious to worry about, your dad is in the best place to get immediate help.

Also, it might speed up responses if give more information about your father's health condition, age, etc. Then people who are able to advise you will be able to respond more effectively.

Thank you!  He doesn't have hepatitis - he's in reasonably good health except for the hemochromatosis, and is in his mid sixties - but it was pretty alarming to have that happen in the middle of the night and not have any idea what was going on or how they'd treat it.  I didn't even know what to google, and ended up here, where it seemed there were a lot of people who had had liver biopsies.  I appreciate your supportive answers.

Just in case anyone else needs info on bleeding after biopsies sometime, I'll briefly explain what happened.  He had some pain before leaving the hospital 2-3 hours after the biopsy yesterday, but thought the pain was probably within the realm of normal.  4-5 hours later, it became clear things were getting worse instead of better (severe pain upon taking deep breaths, etc.)  They did a cat scan to assess the situation, and ended up doing some kind of procedure threading a catheter up through his femoral artery (??? - this is all new to me) to block the leakage with a stent or spring or something like that.  He seemed to improve by the hour after that, and they sent him home approximately 16 hours after re-admitting him. Hopefully this will take care of the problem!
