Bone marrow biopsy needed?

I have had thrombocytopenia, with platelets ranging from 119,000 to 130,000,  no history of bleeding or bruising; have vitiligo, hypothyroidism (well controlled) and most recently recurrent bladder infections and now thrush from the antibiotics.   I have been for various lab tests ordered by a Hem/Onc Dr. and everything was normal.  My doctor feels my immune system is depressed and due to hx of autoimmune issues, feels a bone marrow biopsy should be done.  Is this necessary?

Bone marrow biopsy necessary? I don't know your health status and your various conditions but if you were asking the same questions and you have hepatitis C it all could sense.

Do you have hepatitis C?

Have you had a liver biopsy?
What stage of liver fibrosis is your liver.

Have you had an ultrasound to look at the size of your spleen? An enlarged spleen which is common with cirrhosis of the liver caused low platelet counts.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist? They specialize in desease of the digestive system including the liver.

Are you aware that a low platelet count can be an indication of liver cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C?

119-130 is not an issue as far as your liver is concerned. I have been living with less than 100,000 for over 4 years now. 150,000 is the low end of normal usually. Your platelet count would have to be below 25,000 before there is a risk of bleeding and bruising under the skin.
