Build Up Your Immune System

Broccoli is packed with vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to increase levels of interferon. Interferon is an antibody that coats cells. The coating of cells prevent viruses from attacking. Eating garlic is also beneficial for stopping viruses from multiplying. You may need a breath mint afterward!

I had my 1st ever upper endoscopy done, in Dec. 2008.  Even though it was early since I'm not yet stage 3 or cirrhotic, but I wanted to get one done to make extra sure that none were starting and also for a baseline.  It was clear and I was happy about that, also a small hiatal hernia.

That's what my doctor said as well. Plus, he thought I was overdoing it when I stopped using my iron frying pans.

I thought there was no risk of verices unless one has progressed to late stage 3 fibrosis or cirrhosis?

I eat a lot of broccoli and asked my Hepatologist regarding iron. He said it's okay to eat vegetables with iron, but NOT to take iron supplements. That's where the damage is done.

I will confirm this tomorrow as I have my follow-up appointment with the remaining verices I had banded Monday. The doc said I don't need to have them inspected for another 4-6 months. Everyone should be checked for Esophageal Verices...

I love broccoli as a variety food but garlic as a flavoring staple.  It's been a challenge over the years to get the 'others' to eat these.

I recently discovered a broccoli at Costco that the hubby actually likes. It's smaller and younger and the stalks are thin. Altogether yummy and looks attractive, even to him. I do it more or less the way Tippy does, though I've never let it sit for the flavors to mingle. Will try that.

There's no surer way of getting sick of broccoli than eating it every day. I once did that when I was on a papaya kick in my twenties and still can't stand to eat it, as good as it is.

Thinking of any one food as a panacea  or exaggerating its harm if eaten in moderate amounts is not something I believe in.

Corrections:

"advocated diet and supplements DID reduce her vl to UND."

"It was just a matter of semantics"

Can't spell anymore!!!

Hubby takes warfarin so he has some restrictions with the greens.  I love them so I often make portions for myself only which includes broccoli at least once a week, sometimes more.  I don't like raw garlic, but I saute it in many dishes.
We have attended 3 nutritional classes over the course of 10 years because he is a diabetic and even though there are common denominators with diet which all diabetics should follow, it was stressed repeatedly, diet should be tailored around the needs of each individual.
This applies to hcv patients as well.  Those of us that don't have decompensated cirrhosis are not restricted in our diets like those that are.
I think common sense should be the motivating factor here.  There was a poster not too long ago that advocated diet and supplements will reduced her vl to UND.  Could have been construed as a cure.  It was just a matter of symantics.

That's not a lot of broccoli nor garlic. Wouldn't concern me.
It is true that diet, supplements, treatment, etc. should all be by case to case.
Noticed though, is that people will read or hear that such and such is good for you and eat it everyday..like broccoli...I forgot about the iron content...but natural foods...not packaged...have naturally occurring iron in many.
From what I have read and been told, portions per week will not be harmful.
Garlic..raw in particular, everyday, is not a good idea for those with low platelets.
If liver functions are not good, it can also become rapidly toxic.
One can obtain high amounts of vitamin c in other foods and high quality supplements.
I can't eat pasta or wheat based foods. Case by case.

High iron and ferritin prior to treatment.  Low platelets b/4 and during entire treatment.  Love broccoli and eat it at least once a week.  Add garlic to all my pasta dishes.  Ferritin and iron levels normal and platelets staying the same.
Food restrictions should be evaluated on a case by case basis.

But broccoli also contains iron....and some Hep C patients have too much iron already.

"Interferon is an antibody that coats cells."
----------------

Interferon is a protein that our body produces.  It activates the immune system to fight viruses.

As canary says, garlic thins the blood....so it could cause bleeding on people who have low platelets.

Broccoli..fresh and organic is best..but it's not for everyone.
Some cannot digest it well raw or cooked to death especially those with gastro problems.

Garlic is great but if you have a bleeding problem it thins the blood.
Just something to look into.

Hey I have a wonderful recipe that has broccoli, garlic and olive oil.  Very tasty, healthy and something to zip up the everyday boring broccoli.

Cut and steam broccoli to your desired doneness but remember it will cook longer in the olive oil.

A clove or two of fresh garlic chopped finely.    I use two
A Tablespoon of olive oil into frying pan.
Heat oil for about a minute and add garlic and cook until becomes fragrant
Add steam broccoli and saute for around 8 minutes
Add pepper if desires

Let sit for about a hour or more to let flavors marinade.

By the way I do the same thing with cauliflower but use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic and you saute the cali at a higher heat to make it brown.

If pan becomes dry while sauteing add more olive oil.

If I can do it, you can do it. (And I have been known to do it.) Don't overcook it.

Hmmm.I guess broccoli does not come in cans. I read your post. And this being Tuesday, which is my night to cook, I thought broccoli sounds like a winner. However the cubbard, which contains at least one can of everthing does not contain broccoli. There is some of the fresh stuff in the fridge though. I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to use this steamer thingy. :)
