Can a HCV-RNA PCR test "FALSE POSITIVE"?

I was planning to enter a serios relationship so i take a STD screening, my ob/gyn orded the HCV-RNA PCR Quantitative test, and the result shows 18 IU/ML , it is really strange , because i take the test in september last year and show no detected, and during this period i have no risk of HCV behavior , so is that possible the test is false positive?

Usually an HCV antibody test is preformed first unless as mentioned below

http://www.hcvguidelines.org/full-report/testing-and-linkage-care-figure-1-cdc-recommended-testing-sequence-identifying-current

For persons who might have been exposed to HCV within the past 6 months, testing for HCV RNA or follow-up testing for HCV antibody should be performed. For persons who are immunocompromised, testing for HCV RNA should be performed.

† To differentiate past, resolved HCV infection from biologic false positivity for HCV antibody, testing with another HCV antibody assay can be considered. Repeat HCV RNA testing if the person tested is suspected to have had HCV exposure within the past 6 months or has clinical evidence of HCV disease, or if there is concern regarding the handling or storage of the test specimen.

I would lean toward the latest test being a false positive, simply due to the fact that the viral load is 18 IU/ml (kinda low for a diagnoses PCR) and that you have had no risk factors, however only retesting would prove that, so I would request a retest before I got to worried.

Have a great day
