But don't have that tan
---------------------------------------------
I know, I use sun screen now and wear long sleeves and pants
no matter how hot it is (because of rash) so I am white as a sheet!
I am going to the beach today for 20 minutes. (In shorts and a tank top)
Gonna flaunt my psoriasis for all to see! YUCK!
I'll get in the salt water, look for sea glass (I collect) and go to the pier for lunch.
I haven't done this since starting tx 21 weeks ago and I really need it.
Saw my Rhuemy yesterday and he actually demanded I get to the beach for a half hour.
My psoriasis could benefit and mentally I know I will feel better.
(I'll be achy later though from the sun & will get a lacy rash)

Yeah, there has been a lot of news about coffee recently. One of the most notable is that coffee is insignificant as a diuretic, meaning coffee CAN contribute to fluid intake. When you feel like peeing all the time after drinking coffee, it is because coffee stimulates something down there (not sure of the particulars), you might be peeing more frequently but you are not loosing more fluids as previously thought.
Doctors and nurses are still calling coffee a diuretic though (they are frequently years behind the science, I told my pediatrician that I didn't feel safe giving my babies cough syrup because of studies I've read, my Doc hadn't even heard of the studies, now the FDA is telling mothers not to give tots cough and cold medicine).
Merry, I see you advise people to not drink coffee a lot, I think that might be bad advice considering the positive reports on caffeine slowing fibrosis and coffee preventing liver cancer.
Know what your saying about that S. Florida sun and having a physical job, been there done that long ago lucky to have easy job now!!!!!!! But don't have that tan!!!!!
I look at it this way, if you are thirsty - DRINK
(I always have a bottle or 2 of water with me at all times)
If you are having bad sides, try drinking more and see if that helps.
(You can slo drink juices, powerade, flavored water, etc)
1/2 your body weight in ounces is (really) not a lot of water.
Even if you are overweight, it may sound like a lot, but it's better
to be sipping and holding a water bottle than to be munching and
holding a bag of chips, cookies or junk food.
Personally, being out in the S. Florida sun and having a physical job,
I drink a bit more than 1/2 my 124 pounds in fluids.
(Sometimes quite a bit more) I always have, even before tx.
I think the 1/2 your weight in ounces is just a generalization.
We are all different, so do what's right for you.
You'll find a happy medium.

NYCMark - MartinB has a bit of a thing for "overhydration" and combo therapy
-------------------------------------------
He does doesn’t he. And yes he does know heaps.
The point I was trying to make is that you can over do the hydration thing.
Trying to drink half your bodyweight in oz is not necessarily good advice.
Personally I think if you are thirsty drink if not dont.
Jim
I think its good to discuss the water thing as everyone treats the drink heaps as good advice when this isnt necessarily the case. You can over do it.
MarryBe is pretty close to the mark in my view. Not sure about the coffee though.
It isnt that much of a diuretic.
CS
too much or too lttle can cause probs.
in the Kanen Kindahl swedish study riba concentration effected outcome, but also could cause kidney and blood problems.
I think the key is to listen to your body and have water available throughout the day.
As long as you are reaching for something right there and handy, and by your bed at night, your body should tell you when it needs water. the thing is our bodies tell us to hydrate, and some ignor this.
also, coffee and tea cangehydrate you, and rob you of minerals so water is best.
whether you need an ounce per lb is debatable....think activiy, heat, humidity, diet, all these effect what you need.
as far as things that can hinder riba absorption fiber can hinder...fat can help.
I guess that means I need to drink 140 oz of water a day....omg
As a general rule, if you are emptying a full bladder four or five times per day then your fluid intake is about right.
-----------------------------------
This is very bad advice because frequency of bladder emptying can be affected by numerous things such as UTI's, BPH (enlarged prostate), even anxiety. My doc didn't think half your weight in ounces is excessive. Of course, anything to excess can have consequences.

MartinB has a bit of a thing for "overhydration" and combo therapy Except for his take on this subject, he is generally very well informed and a font of useful information. I would not accept his views on this subject as anything but personal opinion, however.

Thanks for the info, very helpful.

Both Interferon and Ribavirin are water soluable. So yes you can drink too much water.
Heres what Martin Bolton has to say about drinking Water.
You will probably read elsewhere that patients on treatment should drink plenty of fluids. This is questionable advice. It is well known that treatment tends to cause dehydration, and hence requires extra fluid intake. However, excessive fluid intake will stimulate clearance of Interferon by the kidneys, and reduce its effectiveness. Very large quantities of fluids can be dangerous, and will increase anaemia. A balance needs to be maintained, so just be sensible with your fluid intake. A bit more than normal is fine, but don't go mad! As a general rule, if you are emptying a full bladder four or five times per day then your fluid intake is about right.

While on treatment, I drank about 3 liters a day, which was enough to quench my thirst. I still was very dehydrated, with dry eyes, dry skin, dry hair etc. But more water and I would have spent 1/2 my day in the john! --

Thanks. I thought the general recommended amount of daily water intake should be 8 to 10 glasses, so I guess half the body weight in oz. would seem to be an expected average amount of water to drink under normal non-tx conditions. But what do I know...other than I am starting to feel like a camel. Ginger B.
I wouldnt think that could happen. Its very powerful stuff
I don't know if you can flush out the meds. but I would drink the recommended amount. Which is half your bodt weight in ounces. That means if you are 150 lbs then you drink 75 ounces of water a day.
