Coffee, Dehydration and Hep

Small but good fyi........

Channel 11 news in NY Dr. Steve said this morning that new studies show that although coffee is a diuretic, you are getting enough fluid in the drink so that it does NOT cause dehydration as we've always thought.  That actually makes good sense (ever see the size of a venti coffee?) and I'm glad that my doc told me not to avoid coffee while on treatment.

Just wanted to share it since we've discussed coffee so many times.  Since it can help protect our livers from HCC I say go for it and enjoy - it's beneficial!

on a more serious note, and to be fair and balanced LOL, coffee drinking can cause or aggravate reflux, a problem many of us have during treatment. So if that hits home, coffee would probably be the first thing you should drop. Because of this, I probably drank no more than half a dozen cups of coffee during my year or so of treatment.

...which is what happened to me too.  I LOVE my coffee, ADORE my coffee, and cannot tolerate it now, or should I say, it does not tolerate me.  It quickly seeks the escape hatch!!  Unfortunately the upper hatch is the quickest!  : )  Starting wk 8 today.

Surrey are suffering for reflux on treatment. Other contributors to reflex or chocolate, tomato sauce, spicy foods, cigarettes, tight pants, eating within three hours at bedtime, and a number of other things you can research on the Internet.

If the problem still persists, as your Dr. about taking a PPI like Nexium . Simple antacids also might work if your reflux is not that bad. Just try not to take the antacid within 2 to 3 hours of your riba . This does not apply to a PP I which can be taken anytime.

I love coffee but during tx I could not drink it ~ it tasted so vile that I switched to tea for the duration!  Now I'm back on coffee again and loving it.

Thanks for the feedback.  I've been taking one Pepcid AC every day and that seems to help, just can't drink coffee very often, and then not very much at once.  I've given up my one morning cup, it doesn't taste as good as it once did and I have to be concerned about keeping it down if I do drink it.

NO tight pants, are you kidding?  My belly wouldn't let me do that even if I was inclined, it just isn't comfortable, wasn't really before tx and certainly isn't now!  I'm on triple therapy so I have to take med with food at 11 pm, so much for no food before bedtime, I used to go to sleep at 10:30 and now I have to "wait up" to eat and take meds, LOL!
