Communications with doc's offices

by MajNeni, Jun 04, 2003 12:00AM
Hello.
Communications with our doctor's offices are so important, and sometimes get complicated.
I just had a harrowing experience on account of miscommunications.  The lab called in the unusual lab findings of the day to my doc's office in the early evening; only one doc was on call, and he's not a hepatologist.  He saw my abnormal numbers (seriously low wbc and hgb) and immediately called me, leaving a message to stop all my meds until I saw my GE the next morning.  Roller coaster time!  When I got through to my doc in the morning (answering service message was not returned by 9:45), it turned out to be a complete misunderstanding.  (Overheard on the phone: "Who was on call last night?  Dr.... Oh, no!)  Anyway, my lab test results will be marked STAT from now on so they get back into my doc's hands in the afternoon, and he will leave the orders!  Not much harm done to tx, missed one dose of riba and couldn't take any anti-itch stuff or Ambien... so I was pretty frazzled by morning. The next night, I slept 11 hours.
Anyway, I tell this as a cautionary tale; you need to be sure you are getting clear communications from your care-taker.  The more different people in the office get into it, the more chances that messages and instructions get muddled.
All's well that ends well.
