Dangerous Sunscreen

Toxicity is always a problem for the liver. Summer is here. We go to the beaches, we jump in pools, we work outdoors...Living in the desert, I pour on sunscreen. Be very careful you do not use any sunscreen that contains Oxybenzone.

My dermatologist swears that the only sunscreen worth using is Blue Lizard. He did recommend the "Kabuchi version (mostly zinc oxide, think whiteface)" for sensetive skin or long exposures. I understand that you can get this mail order in gallon quantities for fewer $ than buying it 8 ounces at a time.

After exhaustive searching today in two Walgreens and one Wal-Mart, I finally found something that is safe. Banana Boat KIDS SPF 50. This contains Titanium Dioxide and no Oxybenzone. And if that weren't enough, they will give you a smaller bonus 2 oz. tube with the 8 oz. tube. All for $10.99 at Walgreens. You must look for the one with the bonus tube attached because not all of them have it and they are both the same price.

LOL. Could you imagine a 'Kabuki' look on me? That would be all too obvious.

The all organic product I am using, one has to put on 1/2 an hour before sun exposure for it to be working 100%. :-(  That's the only down side.

What I like about it, is that it's organic and has loads of antioxidants in it. It smells deliciously of lavender and other natural oils and herbs. I'm a bit of a health freak and love this kind of stuff. And it feels like a nice moisturizer, without being sticky. I use their whole line of shampoos, face creams, body creams etc... greenpeople.co.uk

The Brits are good at this natural organic stuff.

Today I'm taking back an unopened Neutrogena spray on sunscreen because I too read it contains Oxybenzone. I will go to the local drug store and look for one of the mentioned safe sunscreens. We are in the 108-114 degree weather now in Las Vegas and no relief in sight soon. The sun feels like an oven the minute you step out of your house.

Only issue with the non-chemical Blue Lizard Blocks is a slight "Kabuki" look that will fade as it slowly absorbs. The upside is that this gives you immediate sun protection. Chemical based screens tend to absorb easier so if that's an issue you might try one of their mixed (part chem/part block) formulations. The reg Blue Lizard is probably mixed as is the Sport (waterproof). On tx and for quite awhile post tx I could only tolerate a non-chemical block.

I have been using this Neutrogena product containing "helioplex" because it was top rated in a extensive consumer test I read last year. Now that I read the label closely, I see that it contains 6% oxybenzone and 3% avobenzone! Casual research indicates that oxybenzone is harmless in the dark, but mutagenic when exposed to sunlight. I also not that the product I have contains a logo of the American Cancer Society.

I guess this means that as long as you pay the licensing fee, you can put the American Cancer Society Logo on plutonium containers! Maybe we should consider the ACS logo the equivalent of a Mr. Yuk sticker...

Great!

I live in Denmark. And we don't have that product here. I could order it from the US or Australia over the net.

I'll be fine with my UK Green People product. It's a good product, too. Am not on tx, yet and by the time I start, the summer will almost be over anyway.

Blue Lizard screens are in many U.S. drug stores as well as on the Net.

I know that the Australians are superb in their sunscreen lotions, as they are more affected by ozone depletion than many other countries and really have put a lot of effort into this. If you can get that stuff in the US, I probably think it would be your best bet.

I found the Blue Lizard Products to be among the best when on treatment and post treatment. Blue Lizard "Baby" and Blue Lizard "Sensitve" are for the most sensitive tx skin and both chemical and fragrance free with no PABA. Because they are a "block" (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) the protection is immediate as opposed to the 20 minute or so wait for products that use chemicals. If your skin can handle some chemicals (better cosmetic absorption) the other Blue Lizard products are relatively mild for the skin. Currently I use "Sport" except for the sunniest days when I use a combo of Sport and "Baby". Should also check out sun block specific clothing like made by Coolibar. A good rule of thumb is that if you can see the sun when you hold up a piece of clothing to it, then you can get a burn through that clothing. A decent readily available block is Eucerin Everyday Protection Face Lotion. I use that frequently during the winter and days that aren't as sunny.

I do the same, VCO does offer some protection and it's extremely good for the skin. But unfortunately it's not enough for when you are on tx, then you will need a very good protection and mostly stay out of the sun.

Dang. I hadn't even thought of sunscreen...We Pacific NWer's  run for cover when that bright hot thing comes from behind the clouds! We peer and squint at it, trying to figure out where it came from, and promptly turn to red crispy things while our webbing between the toes cracks...(The rain gods must be angry!) LOL Ty for the "head's up"...LOL

I am using an organic sun screen with broad spectrum UVA & UVB protection. UV filters are a mineral called titanium dioxide  and Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate (derived from cinammon acid esters).  I am using a UK brand, as I live in Europe, but you have similar products in the US.
