Dental Work on TX?

I was told today that youre not supposed to do any dental work on treatment? I wasnt told before hand and heres what happened to me...
Last Wed. I had a filling replaced, no new cavities, just crumbling down and thought I was doing well by replacing these 4. One tooth every visit. This was #2 out of #4 and the visit was fine but I came down with intense chills Thurs night. Went home to bed in bad shape and woke up with a 102.5 on Friday. I saw my GP who knows about the Victrellis Im on and says she saw nothing, blamed a virus or the medication but I forgot to mention the dentist b/c it didnt seem important. Fever went down to 101 Saturday and gone by Sunday..although I developed a sore throat with very swollen glands! Had a scheduled visit to GI Monday morning thank goodness. He told me for sure it was the dentist that opened me up for infection as my WBC is a low 2.7. My body seems to have handled it on its own but how could I be so forgetful!!!
So, you try to be so careful with hand washing, not taking over the counter drugs for possible interactions and managing tx and to overlook something like a dentist visit had me wondering how many other people on tx are doing the same thing? What are their drs. telling them?
Now, I still have a cavity (they say small) but Im concerned that it may A. become infected if my WBC gets lower and B. if I wait 4 more months, will become a root canal.
Im wondering if I can fix this one, and premedicate with an antibiotic? The cavity is under a filling so I wonder if this makes it faster growing...dds and doc are telling me to wait. its not their teeth!

Hi Lee...I have been going to the dentist before I start tx.  We also discussed "if" i have further problems done the road.  He said I would have to do antibiotics before tx because of the likelyhood of infection.  I am just thankful my dentist is on the ball.  Today I have to have a tooth removed and wait about a month before the new one comes in.  So this should be attractive...thanks god it's in the back of my mouth.

Go get an antibiotic and get your teeth taken care of.  Bad teeth can lead to other problems...heart disease!

Have  great day!!!!!  Jules

Thanks for bringing this up. No one ever said anything to me about dental work while on treatment. I'm all done now, but others on the forum planning to treat soon should know.

Wow! I'm sorry you had to go through all of that pain and frustration oppo :( such a shame considering you already have enough to deal with in treatment.
I figure my dentist is telling me to wait because they don't want the liability.  He sounded so spooked when I called him for advice.
Orphanedhawk...I'm calling in the morning for a script and good idea, I can then get cavity  filled. I don't feel well, more than usual lol, so I think I have a mild infection. Plus, what are they waiting for? My platelets to drop and wbc? Or until I get off treatment in the spring and get a root canal? More $$ for them.

Get on top of it immediately. Get at the infection before it gets an hold.
Tooth infection became a real problem for me on treatment. I had started dental treatment before beginning hep treatment. Was due for a couple of extraction about 8wks in and was told by the hep c medical team this would not be a problem. On the day the specialist extraction dentist declined to extract because of the my platelet levels.
Then the fiasco began, I could feel the tooth niggling and was due to be working away for a week. so I went to my regular dentists for anti biotics. He wouldn't give them to me because I was on a clinical trial (tmc435) and wanted confirmation from my consultant? When I got to the doctors the swelling had started, they gave me amoxicillian and then when that did nothing a stronger dose of amoxicillian. That didnt work either. Then a stronger antibiotic and 2 treatments of metronidazale which also did nothing. Eventually I ended up at the maxillofacial unit of the local hospital who said the only effective way of clearing the infection now was extraction and that my platelets were not that low to be a problem. But i had to back to the original dentist for the extraction. They said the would send a letter telling him to give me priority, then took a month to send the letter. What would most likely have been stopped by early intervention with anti biotics or a medical team with the wit to tell patients to get dental matters sorted before treatment became a real problem.
The one thing that did seem to help fight if not cure the infection was a Chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Ideally, we see the dentist, doing any needed work before beginning tx.

I've had to pre-medicate with amoxicillian before going to the dentist.
And yes, you don't want to let your cavity go.
Since you need a script for antibiotics anyway, it sounds like its time to phone your doctor.

If it were me, I'd tell my doc, "I need to safely take care of this cavity now."

Good luck with your teeth.
