Disposal of shots/openthread

Good Morning All,

I am curious, where do you dispose of your shots.  I have them boxed and taped; but do not want to put them in my garbage.  Are there clinics that will take your disposal.  What would I look under to find this location.

Feeling okay so far today.  Slept alot yesterday and think that helps.

Good morning,

My dr. told me to bring them in and they will take care of it.  Hope your day is great.

I bring them (in a sharp's container)to my drs office when i go for my cbc. You could ask them ot your pharmacist.
How is tx treating you?

I feel really good today; especially after the ugly with shot 3.  That shot was very hard to bounce back from. Probably because of the log drop.                                       I am going to force myself to walk this morning.  I will take my oldest son with me; I have a little hill to climb, so won't go to far.

When I talk to doc tomorrow I will ask about disposal.

I see they did not have many threads open yesteday.  Am I wrong at thinking I should open a few on the weekends.  I do not want to anger anyone, but I also know we post alot on weekends.  Should I open another thread with a different subject today.  What's good etiquitte here; I am going away from the computer right now and may not have another chance.

My nurse said to put them in an opaque juice jug, tape, and throw into the trash. They did not want them back. I feel a little wary of throwing them into the trash can. My plan is to put the jug at the bottom of my dog's empty thick dry food bag and further fill with other trash. I don't anyone would dig to the bottom of that bag. The thinks we have to consider.

That's illegal in many municipalities, not to mention the danger of infecting someone. Contact whoever provides your injections and ask for a 'Sharps Container' -- they're usually provided at no charge.

You could also probably get them at drugs stores or buy them on the internet. Since your doctor won't accept them, call a local hospital and see if they will -- or check with your town hall and find out the correct disposal procedure.

If you have a question or not and feel we need more threads the open one.  It will still be used by all so don't worry.  Soon the sx's from shots will get better in time, at least that's what I'm told.

Stay well and look at the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,

I can relate to not feeling well.  What shot are you on again.  I had a tuff time with 3 and that is when my levels started to drop.
Tomorrow I will go back to work; my only concern is the flight of stairs I have to climb. I will just take my time and stop along the way up.

I sure hope things start to turn around for you. There is alot of disorganization in medical insurances.  And, I am sad to say all you can do is what you did.  Keep calling and be very persistant.  Do not accept no for an answer. I know, I know, very frustrating.

Jim...I'll check that all out. Interesting thing is... it was Duke Hospital that gave the jug advice. I was a little wide eyed when she said it. They did want all empty vials and bottles. Thanks

Just a little more.....I use a shredder, compose, and recycle...so my actual trash always goes out the morning of trash pick up. That happens about one hour after we roll the cart out on our quiet little street. I felt my plan would ensure that there was no harm to anyone, and felt I was showing more concern than the hospital. Will still check into it more. Thanks...I know I'm being defensive.

Mine have to go in a sharps container - or any container that can be closed and NOT openned.  As they are completely contaminated and infectious...throwing them in the garbage will not due at all.

Once I fill up the sharps container and close it - it won't open again.  Then I am able to put that into the garbage and the doctors give me another container.

I don't want to take a chance on infecting anyone with this poison disgusting blood - so I follow that rule to the bone.

Have a happy Sunday everyone!

My doctors and pharmacy will not take the sharps container. The hemotologist's office said it was legal to throw them in the trash as long as the can is closed and taped.  I am throwing all of mine in a coffee can and when it is full, I think I will melt some wax and put in it.  In any event they said (in Texas) you could throw them in the trash in a tightly sealed container.

Good thinking cause I always forget to go get another one!

As long as they are closed and can't be opened again I was told the same thing, my docs office / pharmacy wont take them either but they can be thrown in the trash.

I never thought of making something myself...mine is overfull right now so you saved me a trip down to the doctors for nothing.

Using whatever disposal method that is appropriate where you live, I think it's a good idea to get the syringes out of the house at least every month. In the unlikely (but possible) event of an accidental stick, you certainly don't want to re-infect yourself with a needle that was used before you were non-detectible or when your viral level was higher.

Same thing with toothbrushes, nail clippers, hairbrushes and other personal items. I've heard it both ways, but why not err on the safe side and periodically toss out anything that could possibly get micro blood droplets on it.

Thanks for the info on that. Course now i gotta try not to obsess... So if I have work gloves on, cracked cut hands...I do label all my gloves and no one else uses em but am I messing myself up unless I throw em out? Tried disposables, just don't cut it at work.

Hey Jim, you raise an interesting question I always forget to ask. I thought I remember my dr once saying that it's passed through 'fresh' blood. He is an infectious diseases specialist and I hope I'm not misquoting him. So what constitutes fresh blood. Or how long is the blood contagious after it's out of the body?
Feeling any better? nearing completion right?

I'm sure I'm being overly cautious but what if they're wrong about the fresh blood thing. Wouldn't be the first time.

Thanks for asking about treatment. I'm still having good and bad days but it's starting to level off into a "routine" if you want to call it that :) Decided to do 52 weeks, so about five weeks left unless something changes. Looking forward to getting off all the drugs I'm taking.

Hi,

I think the sharp box is used for things other then HepC.  Shot 20 that is great your almost there.  Sat the 28th I go home for 10 days.  Can't wait to see Barbara and the Beagle and get some warm weather, NY is to cold for me.  Barbara's best friend is flying in today from California to spent time with her, they were friend's since Ridgewood. Hope all is well, say hi to Nancy.

my practice, teaching hospital, took my sharps and gave me a new one each time. No problems. When I was at the airport, shooting up, the Pegasys syringe has a snap on cap that won't come off once you flip it up, so you can safely dispose in the trash.

I'm really surprised the dr. would not take the used needles.  Your right it would end up at the landfill if doesn't take it.  I don't know if he can say know.  It's like if you change your oil in your car, you can't just throw it away it's against the law. you have to bring it to any service station or even the store you bought the oil and they must accept it and dispose of it properly.  The same holds true to medical waste.  Maybe all states differs on laws, so maybe your state allows the Dr. to say no.  But some how I don't think so. You should really fine out your state law on medical waste.

Try the board of health again, but ask for someone in charge.  It doesn't make sense to me either someone has to know. Is Firestone vinsyard hot at the end of Oct?  I will ask my so today if it's up the mountain.  We need to know how to dress, etc.

My sx's have been good, only now I'm getting little bumps on my face and when I shave it iches, have been putting the gold bond lotion on, hope it works soon.

Hope all is well with you,

BB
