Does an enlarged spleen only occurr with cirrohsis

My partner is on week 10 of treatment, genotype 3 - undetected at week 2 - at the beginning of treatment he had an enlarged spleen -i'm guessing he still does as they have not told us otherwise.  He also has early cirrohsis so is it the hep C or the cirrohsis causing the enlarged spleen?  Thanks

Splenomegaly or enlarged spleen is common in cirrhosis. Assuming your partner doesn't have another disease that is enlarging the spleen...This condition develops as a result of cirrhosis with portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is caused by the liver being so scarred that the normal blood flow through the liver gets backed up and finds other paths to flow.

Other complications of portal hypertension are:
Ascites - fluid in the abdomen
Hepatic encephalopathy - problems with brain functioning
Risk of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis - infection
Esophageal varices - enlarge veins that can brust

When the spleen is enlarged. The spleen will contain more platelets then it normally would. This results in Thrombocytopenia or a low platelet count. Platelets cause the blood to clot. This is easy to diagnose with a blood test. Normal platelet counts range from 150,000 to 450,000. Persons with cirrhosis will usually have platelet counts under 100,000. A doctor can also feel enlarged spleen (on the lower left of the rib cage).

It is very good that he is treating now (and appears to be working) before his cirrhosis gets any worse.
