Does anyone know why you would not qualify for the tx therapy?

My husband does not qualify for ant Hep C therapy.  Is it possible to be too sick?  He is on the transplant list and does have Hep C.  Anyone know any reasons why you couldn't receive therapy for the Hep C?

Thanks Chev.. Maybe I should start a new thread. This is really getting off of the original topic.

In any event, all too often the 'old world' practices are often discounted due to the lack of 'scientific' evidence.

Well, not too long ago a guy by the name of Norman Cousins came onto the medical landscape with some pretty 'far out' opinions regarding recovery and recouperation from terminal illnesses. You may want to do a web search for his name. He was the Editor (I believe) of the Saturday Evening Post. He was dx'd with some terminal illness and was given the standard 6 months, or so, to live. He ended up on the staff at UCLA Medical School doing research on the effects of attitude, humor, laughing, etc. on the body's ability to 'cure' itself. Amazing... and all with no substantial "Scientific Evidence", he surpassed ALL expectations and taught others the valuable wisdom of laughing and having a positive attitude.

I worked within the medical community for many years. As an administrator, I was privy to the credentials of many physicians and healthcare providers. Trust me.. they don't all own white gowns, white hats, nor white horses!!! Like everyone else, they make a living of their "practice"! Remember, they have a practice, that is they practice at their profession.

I don't want to discount GOOD physicians, nurses, practitioners, PA's, Psychologists, nor Psychiatrists.. EMPHASIZE GOOD. But, I have also run across many who should not have been practicing on cadavers, much less living humans. Just because someone ATTENDS a school of higher learning does not necessarily mean that they have LEARNED what was being taught.

Case in point.. PRAYER for sick people. Where does science fit into THIS category. It is not 'scientific' nor can it be inserted into any of the contemporary subject matter in the academic circles. YET, there are many, and I have witnessed them, cases in which a terminal case was reversed without explanation... other than PEOPLE PRAYED! Explain that to me. On the other hand, you don't have to. I believe it.

So, despite my 30 years of experience within the medical community, no one can ever convince that their 'medicine' is any better than mine. Consider what the pharmaceutical companies have been able to do with their 'gifts' to physicians. Trips to resorts, books, dinners, blah, blah, blah.. All of a sudden the merchandise ends up on the hospital pharmacy shelves, and is prescribed to patients for pickup at local pharmacies.. I HAVE WITNESSED IT!!

OH BOY... I going overboard now.. Well, talk to you later.. Gotta go drink the local water, take a long walk, eat some local veggies, and laugh until I wet my pants..

Ciao

Well Cuteus.. thanks for the welcome.

I apologize if I come across too strong, I really don't want to alienate people. However, I have been blessed by residing in various parts of the world. It's a real shame that the most technologically 'advanced' country in the world appears to be one of the most ignorant regarding cultures and customs in other parts of the world.

Some of these 'backward' countries really have a tremondous of knowledge and wisdom which would benefit our US population. Holistic, Herbal, Acupuncture, Body Massage, medicinal practices have been in other countries for centuries. The AMA (American Medical Asso) and current Psychology/Psychiatry tend to be convinced that the only answers to the problems of the 'dis'-eased US population lies in their offices. Not so!

I have visited almost all of Western Europe (lived in Germany for 18 years). I am intimately familiar with Mexico. Now getting familiarized with Asia. The beliefs, practices, and diets of these countries are interesting. At first glance weird, then POW! I always wondered why my grandmother (died at 96) used to cut a piece of AloeVera to treat my boo-boo's. Well, that was 50 years ago. I don't wonder anymore. As a matter of fact, I don't wonder about a lot of things. I just take wisdom where I find it and try to make use of it.

I have been out in the wilderness of Kyrgyzstan picking 'weeds' on the desert floor. Taken there by a 'backward' guide. It was explained to me that if I make a tea of this herb, it will relieve some Liver related symtoms and works well for kidney issues also. Guess what?...

Today I happened to be eating lunch with a Kyrgyz Taxi driver. I was introduced to the belief/practice of drinking Mare's milk in the spring time. Well, it's not spring, but trust me.. If I was bold to 'experiment' during the 60s (I didn't inhale).. I'll take my milk at room temp please...

Warm Regards,

An ex-Healthcare Administrator living in Krygyzstan

Hello there and welcome to this my lifeline forum.
Don't take the jokes too seriously, we tease about anything here, including cowtipping and badgers and I for one am open to expanding my knowledge of the various cultures. I try to reserve judging cultures by the behaviour of the few, because EVERYWHERE there are good apples and bad. classifying one barrel as undesirable due to one or two bad fruits seems like a waste of enjoying the many good ones.
unfortunately all too often many in this country throw names and labels to all members of one group based on the few. all in government are crooks, drug co are all corrupted, etc. This is a sad reality nowadays in the US and those that want to change this, get insults and labels also. It is kind of funny now that I think about it.
I am glad you are free of symptoms, I hope that you also get free of HCV, you know the bug is still working on your body regardless of how you feel. Come back and enlighten us about other cultures, Ignorance is what seems to bring a lot of unfounded hate to many here.
best to you

As an expatriate I feel that I am qualified to comment on some of the remarks being voiced about this part of the world. Please bear with me..

It seems astounding to me that people of a 'civilized society' would make statements without any knowledge of the facts, regarding a country so remotely distant from their own country and customs.

At present, with all the technological grandeur of the 'free world', specifically the U.S., Americans lead the world in obesity and FAT related health problems. I walk the streets of Central Asia daily and I have seen but a few obese individuals. Food is purchased at the local markets, with few exceptions. There is a couple of 'super market' type of stores, but for the most part, you get your provisions at the local bazaar. I would attempt to expound on other 'issues' currently plaguing the USA but I think this alone should suffice.

As to the water, no I don't drink the water from the tap, I purchase bottled water. Would I drink tap water? Yes.. under certain circumstances. BUT, you would never catch me eating an AMERICAN Hamburger either. I am confident that if injected with sufficient amounts of salt/sugar and fat, dog dung could be sold to the American public with little more than a whimper from the people at Consumer's Digest. That only, due to the fact that they are the ones who would be the bearers of bad news to the 'informed' public.

I was diagnosed with HVC approximately six years ago. It wasn't until I moved to Central Asia and 'started' drinking bottled water, eating produce from the local markets, walking everywhere I went and quit with the fat factory food.. that many of my SYMPTOMS of HepC subsided. I sleep well, I eat regularly, I have 'normal colored' stools, and I am off the anti-depressants.

So, if this is the price I must pay for "not drinking the water" - I will gladly do it. Oh, almost forgot, some of the best medicine can be found right here in Central Asia where the names such as: Pfizer, Merck & Co., Eli Lilly, Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, etc. are not all that common. And lest, there be a mass exodus from the US to this poor little country.. I can make a visit to the local Gastro clinic for about $16.00. Trust me... There is more 'happening' here than you are aware of...

Rick has kidney failure and they are considering a T.I.P.S procedure for him to keep the fluid off the abdomen.  They said tx would not be an option until after a transplant.  Rick has never been a drinker....so alchol has never been an issue.  Thanks for all the advice.

Tina,

There were very few side effects, and the ones I felt, I thought were side effexts from the Lexapro, as they were ones that my Dr told me I might experiance.
I had mostly digestive problems, severe constipation and extreme sleepyness during the day this was off and on.
Looking back I do feal like there was more going on whit me then I could put my finger on, but there can be so many SX of the SSRI's.
My new belife is, if I am being put on a new med, that I have never taken before, I want Liver panels run at least once a month until I am satisfied it is safe for my liver.I don't need any help damaging it faster!!!!!

I guess it was a rare SX.

If you have more specific ?

I don't have an answer for you on this issue. I might guess that snook man is on the right track with the CBC answer. If your husband is riddled with infection they may be worried about decreased neutrophils. Perhaps he has a very enlarged spleen causing his platelet count to be too low to risk the tx. And I will say that different transplant centers have different protocols regarding a whole host of issues. At this stage I would probably follow the advice your getting from the center and hope and pray for the best. Good luck. Mike

I had total liver failure, but the Dr.s treated w/ Prednisone for inflamation, lactulose for ammonia, and lasix and aldactate for fluid retention. When they life-flighted me they told my husband not to expect me to be alive when he got there(4 hr. drive) however after 9 days I went home, the to alcohol tx.  I was approved for Hep C tx. 18 mos. later after 6 mo. hiatus changing ins. comp. I still took all my meds and ate a liver freindly diet. Low protien, lotsa fruit and veggies, and fats & carbs. I took Senior one a day, cuz no iron, and Vitamin B complex. My condition improved enough during this time so that they were willing to risk tx. I made it through 24/24 w/ no extra meds but my platelete situation was very shaky. Now am waiting for 6 week PCR results to see if I'm winning. I showed undetectible at 14 weeks so am very hopeful. If you want, print this and show your Dr. At the very least, see what Meds he is on. Also, and I can't stress this enough, NO ALCOHOL!!!!
             Hope this helps,    Joni

Are you saying the lexapro caused your liver enzymes to climb? What were your symptoms? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I just spoke with the liver transplant coordinator and she said Rick is just too sick.  She said he has had so many infections and complications already, that the tx probably would worsen him overall.  But some of you sound like you were literally on your death bed before you got the treatment....I don't get it.

Thanks for your encouragement. It's kinda like earlier posts about that new "cure", never discount anything. Good to hear you are on your last shot. I'm praying that you will remain clear and lead a very healthy and productive life. When I first came here for help, it was you and Dallas that inspired me and got my mind ready to accept the tx. Have you hear from Dallas lately? It's knda like graduation. Some go on, others stay and new ones come on-board. Good luck and SVR forever....Neal

Just talked with my GI and all of my blood levels are back to normal after everything dropping 2-3 weeks ago. If you remember, his recommendation was to load up on red beef and see what happens. That "red meat to help raise RBC" method was met with alot of controversy but it just goes to show you, the good Dr. knew more than I did. Now I will remain on full dose for  the remainder of my 9 weeks and finish up at the end of this summer. Whew! I've really been stressing waiting for this news. Good luck to all. Neal

Well where to start,,,,

The TX has been tolerable, but if you remmember my ALT and AST and many other blood level went out of sight on my pre TX blood work.
When the Dr that is treating me for my SX's saw this he pulled me off the Lexpapro. So I have been dealing with some SSRI withdrawals. The good news is that My ALT came down from 726 to 347 and the rest of the liver panels haved moved back towards the normal range, I guess I was having a hepatoxic reaction to the Lexapro.
I'll tell you this! TX is hard enough without having to go through some SSRI withdrawals.
My White count has drop to 2.1 and Neutrophils are down to 460 So I am to reduce my pegasys dose by 36 Mg's to 144 Mg's and will recheck everything next week.

I would like to thank all of you for your prayers!!!!

Many, many doctors won't treat ESLD(end stage liver disease) hep c cases just because.  I had to find another specialist in liver disease across the state-literally over the mountains and thru the woods-who would treat me.  His attitude was after all, you have nothing to loose since you're gonna die anyway.  So, i was in a study for ESLD hep c's and cl'rd in 18days after being infected in the mid 60's.  That was 2 yrs ago, I got the call that I was clear.  I couldn't beleive it.  I had all the contra-indications-addictive behavior, substance abuse and 6 yrs of therapy.  Plus no insurance.  I had a real easy time.  the minor things past--my hair grew back in soft, curley and w/o the grey-the sensitive, ichy skin, etc. are no more.

Why don't you just ask?  Maybe the doctor just hasn't tried tx'ing ESLD hep c's.  altho there isn't much info out there b/c there are not too many of us, it can be done.

I've kept up the lifestyle changes needed for an ESLD ex-hep c'er.  I don't know if I'll always be classified ESLD b/I think one your liver decomp's, you're always classified that.

Ask why no tx, your hubby really has nothing to lose @ this stage.

Did you read that in 'Dilbert'?  If you're serious, what's interesting is the fact that hep c is a world wide pandemic that's only getting worse.  B/honestly would you drink the water in that country?  That's my litmus test-in fact I wouldn't drink the bottles water from that country.

I believe it would be because his CBC total are to low. There are afew reasons people are treatable, mental conditions, low cbc's, too much present damage, autoimmune disorders, and?? Hopefully someone else will come along and clear things up. That is all I can think of off top of my head, and it's hard to sort stuff out up there!! Good luck, and best wishes to you!!
