During tx no viral load at 8 weeks but now positive PCR test at 16 weeks

I have raised my younger sister since she was a teenager.  She is now 20.  She was diagnosed with Hep C 1A two years ago when giving blood.  She started treatment beginning of June with a viral load of over 4 million.  In August the doctor said her viral load was undetectable.  The lab she did last week is now showing a positive PCR test. What does it mean when it changes like this?

Hi Darla--

Unfortunately, it sounds as though you’re your sister may have suffered what is known as a ‘viral breakthrough’. This occurs when virus returns during treatment, even though the patient remains on the medications. It is a relatively rare occurrence; I believe it happens in <4 or 5% of patients.

I assume she is, or was still in therapy at the time.

She should discuss her options with her doctor before making any changes to her treatment regimen…

It does indeed  sound like viral breakthrough.
This normally occurs in what we call 'slow responders'-people who take a long while to become undetectable.
Your sister however has resonded well for a 1a so it is a bit surprising-don't suppose you have a number for the positive PCR?
The worst case scenario is that she will have to treat again in a year or two when the new drugs are out.
At her age time is on her side.

I'm just wondering if it could have been a false positive. It has happened to several people here on the forum.
