If you have HCV it is not unusual to have elevated ferritin levels. If you are undergoing antiviral therapy it is also not unusual to have elevated ferritin levels but that usually subsides after cessation of therapy. Another extra-hepatic manifestation of HCV that causes high ferritin levels is Porphyria Cutanea Tarda. With PCT, fluid filled blisters will develop on the hands and arms and the skin tears very easily. Phlebotomy is required to lower the iron levels in the blood.
If you do not have HCV you should consult with a hematologist or your GP to find out why your ferritin is elevated. If left untreated, high ferritin can result in iron overload in the liver which in turn causes liver damage.
Have you been checked for hemochromatosis?
