I think you mean End--stage liver disease (ESLD). Liver "failure" occurs when large parts of the liver become damaged beyond repair and the liver is no longer able to function. It is the final stage of liver disease which leads to death if a liver transplant isn't performed.
What happens in end-stage liver disease?
End-stage liver disease means the liver has been severely damaged. Hepatitis C can be one cause of liver damage which can lead to scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). People with cirrhosis can go on to develop liver failure or liver cancer over time so they need to be under a liver doctor's (hepatologist) care and evaluated for treatment.
No one can predict how long he has to live. Each person is different in how and how quickly the liver disease progresses. There is a scoring system called the "MELD model" for assessing the severity of chronic liver disease and estimates the survival probability of a patient with end-stage liver disease. His doctor would know what his number/degree of illness is.
Your children's father needs to under the care of a hepatologist. Only a doctor can assess and manage his health at this point. If you want answers talk to his hepatologist who will know the full extent of his liver disease.
Hope this helps.
Best of luck to you!

They told me I had end stage liver Disease. I'm more than halfway through treatment and have responded very well to the drugs. If SVR happens I'm under the impression the cirrhosis will stop. If it stops I get to live longer than otherwise. There is hope.
If he is doing 'exceptionally well' he may have several years yet. Stay on these boards, read, ask questions. All the very best.
