I just recieved a frantic phone call from my mother (she has had hep C for 20 years, 15 years untreated and she is in the end stages of Hep.C) And she is scared because she says she feels like she is losing her mind, she said she forgets everything!! She said that she has to write things down in order to remember. Well I bet this is a little scarraed but im very upset!! About 4 years ago i told to a women who lost her husband to this and she told me right before he dided he lost his memory and then his mind and he died shortly after! I dont know what to say im just ask all of you to please respond to this and tell me what you all know about the final stages of Hep. C.

The artile that I read yesterday said that these parlors or basement folks were not sterilizing at all.  The only reason they found them is because of a bacteria that was popping up on the people.  Apparently most are 16 or so years old.

I haven't really heard of End Stage HepC before either.  There are many different levels and you are NOT even talking about cirhhosis which would be a level here. Transplant is a viable option that people pursue when their livers are too badly damaged and it is a LIFE SAVER.

MANY of us have brain memory problems...and we are NOT in any End Stage anything.

Please make sure she see's a doctor ASAP it could be something simple like anemia causing her this problem maybe.

Zoey, you have been here before, haven't you? I seem to recall your name. If your mom is in end stage liver disease, there is a forum that addresses folks in that condition, I don't have the addy handy, sorry.
I hope you can get some answers.

Sorry you are so worried about your Mom. Is she seeing her dotor regularly? I agree with the others, you or she should cal the doctor, there might be something he should/can do for her. I know that sometimes ammonia can build up in your system and that can cause the symptoms you are describing. There are medications for it so I'd think a doctor visit is in order. They also need to check her I would think in case it is being caused by something else.
Good luck dear, you are a very sweet and loving daughter, I bet your Mom is very proud of you.

Isn't there any possiblity of a transplant?  Is she on the list?

GOD this disease makes me mad. I'm so sorry that you are having such a bad time with it - mommy's are our mommy's no matter how old we get. It breaks my heart for you.

Hi, just wanted to point out to you that none of us are doctors, and none of us can really pinpoint what exactly is going on with your Mom without a whole lot of info, and then we would just be analyzing these things from our own experience, etc...and not as professional experts...did you mention if your mother had alcohol or any problems like that? Forgot...

As far as who exactly knows what a person's timetable is for dying, only the universe, etc...knows that, certainly not any one of us here, not even the doctors always know that one for sure...

My younger sister was almost pronounced dead, and was only given days to live with a 10% chance of pulling through...went into liver failure and kidney failure, was incubated for close to a month, spent 3 more months in the hospital...and that was almost 4 years ago now, just talked to her yesterday and she's walking almost 2 miles a day...course she still has health problems, but I wouldn't bet what her timetable is...

Not to say everyone will have this experience, but I just know from this experience that there is always hope...

There is a woman on another board I speak with every so often, everything went wrong with her, kidneys, the whole shot, I was almost certain she wasn't long for this world, her liver transplant kept giving her trouble, etc...She just posted yesterday that everything seems to be getting much, much better, she's feeling much better, etc...and has resumed close to a normal life with great expectations...

So remember don't give up hope, find out what's going on with her, talk to her doctors, etc...best of luck to you...

Here is a support group for cirrhosis with a lot of info, and there is another liver failure support group from the Janis and Friends site if I'm not mistaken....

(Natto) is sticky and has strong smell and taste. Natto is a good source of protein...

Interesting. I used that protein line a lot in my younger days, but never had it referred to as Natto.

But seriously, thanks for the heads up. Whoops.

Sorry about your mom and what both of you are going through. There are no doctors here so all we can do is speculate. If she's seeing a liver specialist, maybe you should give the doctor a call and discuss her condition. If she's not currently seeing a liver specialist (hepatologist) now would be a good time to get her one. A lot of us have forgetfull periods so I wouldn't jump to conclusions before you speak to her doctor.  I hope everything works out.

I  know you are scared and totally understand what you are going through.  At your young age to think of loosing a parent is very scary.   Maybe you could make an appt for your mom and go along.  There is a patient confidentiality thing so she would have to okay him talking to you. Anyway maybe he can tell you what to expect.  Also ask if hospice would be an option. At the end I really recommend it.  They truely are wonderful and can help your mom.  I would have never believed it until I experienced it with my ailing father.  Anyway I know you need someone to talk to and wish I could help more.

Did anyone see the artile in the news today about the kids getting tatoos back in 2004 from people that did not sterilize etc.  They are now finding skin problems....I bet in the next 5 years or so there will be HEP people out of the woodwork.

I remember Kalio talking about tatoos and she brought up an interesting point, that it's not the needles per se that always have the virus? forgot exactly.. but it was interesting and I was discussing this with someone the other day and spaced it..(whoda thought? haha) anyway, what was that you said Kalio? if youre around and can refresh my memory...no, I didn't see that article...

Some of these posters are totally out of line and others are mis-informed.

As to your mother, memory problems and 'losing one's mind' are signs of heptic encephalopathy.  this is a toxic build up of unprocessed chemicals in the body.

Ammonia is a major cause b/not the only toxin that causes this condition.

There are meds to reduce the toxins and there are certain dietary changes that help immensly.

Dairy converts quickly to ammonia as does red meats and animal proteins in general.  Avoid these.

A diet of whole grains, brown rice, lightly steamed veggies and juicing are preferable.

Getting the proper nutrients is vital when the liver is mal functioning so badly that memory and personality changes occr.

I have a decomp'd liver due to a massive bled cause by mis dx hep c from 1967 transfusion.  I cl'd the virus-2b-b/ still must monitor my food very carefully.

  I'm classified as end stage liver disease/hep c.  Appearently, you can't 're-comp' a liver, so here I stay-end stage.

The best nutritional boost I take is a protein shake/smoothie every morning.  I use a rice protein, Activa yogurt-live bacteria-apple juice and fresh fruits.  all in the blender-sometimes an egg.  I also add liquid 'joint juice', calciunm-minerals and all around vitamins.  I get all these @ costco.

Junk food, white flour, corn syrup and fruitous are really bad, trans fats the worse.

The fewer toxins one takes in, the fewer toxins the damaged liver has to filter out.  And the fewer toxins the body makes, the same filter thing.

Sam-e and milk thistle, green tea and fish oil caps all help too.

Don't worry-the 'end' is not really then 'end'.  One can linger quite well @ this whistle stop.

Just wanted to say, my sister, who has ESLD also, does very much the same as New Sojourn in terms of her diet, and it has benefitted her greatly, she's come back from a lot...she maybe cheats a little once in awhile, but not often...she also exercises and drinks plenty of water, all the healthy things youre supposed to do anyway...
