Estrogen / G.I. PA/ Anyone

by jonihs, Oct 05, 2003 12:00AM
I am 12 yrs. post hysterectomy and take estrogen everyday. When I found out it's bad for my liver (I have cirrhosis) I stopped for about a month. I don't think I got a good nights sleep the whole month. Night sweats to the max. So I started back on the estrogen. How bad is it for my liver and whats a reasonable tradeoff here. ! time I ended up in the psych ward when I was off estrogen. I am never easy to live w/ when I don't take it, but I don't want it to force me to transplant either. Any help or advise appreciated.     Joni

I take Estrogen replacement, but I only get the estrogen, not the progesterone, since, I too, had a hysterectomy 12 years ago.  I could not tolerate the pills, so I get shots.  I'm not real interested in stopping my Estrogen at this time, but will probably go off of it in another couple of years.  I'm 42 years old now.  Susan40

When I started treatment, I was on a combination of estrogen and progesterone. I had to balance the risks with my quality of life. While on treatment and feeling worse as the weeks went by, I did a very slow taper off the hormones. For two weeks I elimanated one pill per week and continued eliminating one pill per two weeks until I was off of them. My theory was that I am going to have most of the symptoms anyway from the meds and at least my docotor will treat all my sides while on the combination treatment. My hope is that when I finish treatment in 6 weeks, I will NOT have to take anything!I read the package insert for my hormones and there were no liver warnings and my doctor agreed I could take them but I did want to come off of them because of increased cancer and heart disease risks.
Good luck,
Barb

I don't know if this will help you, but I'm 1 year past a hysterectomy and I cannot take estrogen because of the type of breast cancer I had 2 years  before that.  My Oncologist gives me a medicine called BELLAMINE-S tabs for menopause  They do WONDERS for the hot-flashes....I call 'em my crazy pills --- you know why --- I'm crazy without them!!  Ha ha!  I'm not sure if this can be for heppers too, but I don't see why not.....& I think it's worth asking
