Eye pressure

Is eye pressure a common symptom and is there any thing they can do about it?

I subjectively felt pressure in both eyes during treatment, along with general sensitivity to light, etc. You should have gotten a thorough eye exam prior to initiation of treatment; of not, it’d be a good idea now to see an ophthalmologist. Rare but serious eye problems can occur during Tx; an exam would put you at ease.

Good luck with your treatment outcome,

Bill

Ophthalmologic disorders

Decrease or loss of vision, retinopathy including macular edema, retinal artery or vein thrombosis, retinal hemorrhages and cotton wool spots, optic neuritis, and papilledema may be induced or aggravated by treatment with peg-intron alpha 2b or other alpha interferons. All patients should receive an eye examination at baseline. Patients with preexisting disorders (e.g. diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy) should receive periodic ophthalmologic exams during interferon alpha treatment. Any patient who develops ocular symptoms should receive a prompt and complete eye examination. Pegintron alpha 2b should be discontinued in patients who develop new or worsening ophthalmologic disorders.

My doc would not let me start the treatment without seeing an Opthalmologist. The pressure needs to be checked or serious eye problems can occur. The opthalmologist said it very rare but needs to be checked before starting Tx.

Eye pressure (pressure inside the eye, checked by the eye doctor at every visit to watch for glaucoma) or eye pain?   They used to require an opthalmologist check-up before TX, when interferon was new.  Since most of the TX-related eye probs usually resolved after TX, they stopped doing it.  I had a good bit of eye pain, a stabbing pain in the eye that lasted for about a minute.  Started for me about 3-5 weeks into TX, lasted a month and then stopped again.  Had similar lymph node pain for the same period.  It all went away again.

I also had a feeling of pressure in my eyes, it seems like it went on for the first few weeks, maybe as long as 2 months, and then subsided.  My annual eye exam was due during my tx, and it was reassuring to have the eye doc check and say nothing had changed.
