Fatty food and Riba absortion

Fatty food and Riba absortion

Heyyy world, heeeeere I am :-) dadadada to rain on my parade :-)

When I was DX they told me I had mild steatosis and that I should avoid fat in my diet (liver friendly diet). On the other hand, the doc gave me a booklet sponsored by Roche that says the only certified no-no for a HEP- C patient is alcohol???.
It says that no special HCV diet has been identified yet and that patients should eat from all food groups. Fish, meat, dairy, vegetables, fruits, etc...
So now, that I've been introduced to the infamous Riba funk :-( (in the morning I take it with cornflakes or liquid yougurt or eggs and bacon on the weekend).
But in the afternoon I'm running out of options...I still want to eat all kinds of food...
Can I have for instance spanish cured Serrano Ham (it is like Parma Ham but fattier) to improve riba absorbtion? but wouldn't I be hurting my fatty liver even more? the same goes for ice cream... I love vanilla with chocolate fudge but am I messing with my chances to attain SVR or increase fibrosis post tx? I read many of you take ice cream everyday...I still haven't lost my appetite, and got same tastebuds left-
Will I loose weight if I eat the same? or is IFN the real cause of weight loss? maybe we loose weight because we drink so much water...You see, don't want to end up relapser with high cholesterol and clogged arteries...
The apple cyder vinegar is mixed with what?
I'd appreciate your takes on the subject..
Tomorrow I go for my 2 week pcr... wish me luck ;)

saludos a todos mis amigos virtuales

Why don't you just take it at dinner time when you are already introducing fat in to your diet in a normal meal?

I take it at breakfast and at dinner just for that. 7am - 7pm. And if there isn't a highly fattening food for dinner well then I just feel obligated to eat some ice cream for desert right away ;) hahahaha.  Seriously though that is how I ended up with this ice cream habit now - after 63 weeks still going STRONG. Just too many flavors. ;)

Since the Riba binds to the fat I try hard to make sure it's always there but seriously...even having some peanut butter would work since it's one of the highest forms of natural fat right?

Or just take my ice cream advise and have a milkshake or a sundae heeee heee - that never seems to be a problem!

Thanks for you response.
The thing is that I'm taking the RIBA early (like 5 or 6 pm) to avoid insomnia (and it has worked well so far)...Over here in Spain we do lunch a 2.30 pm and dinner at 10 -11 pm...way too late... wacked up schedule
And is too early for my wife to have dinner.. She was really supportive the first week but now she goes with the usual ("fix it yourself" line).. She just still does not believe I'm sick...
I guess she needs to see me like the russian spy :-( to really get it. I don't really want her to get too involved eother because she may freak out in the long run. So I end up eating anything out of the fridge (cheese, a tangerine, cold turkey) :-(
The peanut butter sandwich is a good idea though!!!
and I agree with you, working really helps during tx

If I don't have anything fatty around to take my riba with, a spoonful of peanut butter is what I take. Nothing like a good scoop of peanut butter with a water chaser. YUM!!!! Also, sometimes I'll just eat one of those little candy bars leftover from Halloween..I've been losing weight so it doesn't matter to me if I have chocolate 3,4,5,6 or 7 times a week.
Activia yogurt is good too..a little expensive, but tasty. It's sold in a small green box near the regular yogurt at the grocery store.
I usually take my riba around 3 pm now. I don'l like taking it too close to bedtime because of the way it makes my mind race.
Best of luck!

Activia? I think the one they sell here with that name is like metamucil...are we talking about the one made of soy bean and green tea?
I think I rather stick to your peanut butter suggestion... :-)

Be well

It's good to know it's not just me who wants to stand up and yell "HEY I'M STILL ON TREATMENT WHAT HAPPENED TO MY SPECIAL TREATMENT THAT i HAD THE FIRST FEW WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!"

It seems like the harder we work to go to work and keep a normal schedule the FASTER our families forget that we are STILL doing it doesn't it?

It's like hey do I have to stay home and whine all day just to get a grilled cheese sandwich?

hahahaha. That is why I have Day of Rest Day on Saturday...I need my special day so on Saturday I go ooooooh the treatment hit me haaaaard hahaha and I stay in bed and relax.  If I don't whine........everyone seems to forget!

;)

I think Activia is a yogurt that just came out here in the states that has some bacteria cultures in it to help with digestion.

I have a yogurt shake every morning and I tell you - after treatment it will be a cold day in h3ll before I'll want anymore yogurt! But I just drink it down like medicine at this point...anything to take those pills right?

I've quit the ice cream and am now onto avocados with some oil and vinegar for breakfast. Love it. I have a tough time with the fat/Riba because my appetite is so poor. But I do have the scubado diet of grab whatever outta the frig....Cold turkey with mayo, cheese and apple, chocolate milk. Whatever fits my fancy and I don't have to go to the store, I grab. LOL Otherwise I probably would get NO fat with my Riba and that at this point is more important IMO. Without the fat the Riba has a 14% chance of less Riba absorbtion.

Activia is a yogurt that aids digestion. The mixed berry flavor is Da Bomb!
Did I just say that???

Hey!  Hope all goes well with your PCR tomorrow!  My doc won't give me one until 12 weeks - but I am optimistic.  Taking fat with Riba was a dilemma to me as well.  I've spent so many years staying AWAY from fat that I didn't even remember what had fat in it anymore LOL!  Sometimes I eat peanut butter toast.  Also it sticks in your throat making me want to drink water to get it down, hence a little more help on fluid intake.  Now since its the holiday season - Egg Nog is in the stores.  Now I love Egg Nog but haven't bought it for years because of the high fat content.  I saw it in the store and was like YES! - now I have an excuse to drink it.  So I have a half a cup with my Riba everyday - oh the joy!  Did you read my last response to you on the thread where you were asking how my 2nd shot went?  If not, go back and read it.

Take good care.  (We're all in the same boat about others not treating us special...well I take that back...when I see my boyfriend which is about every other weekend, he takes great care to make sure I eat well.  Wonder if that would stay the same if we were together everyday - I think not! :)

Cidar vinegar has been mentioned but not addressed.  I am curious.  Anybody know why you would want or need that in your diet?

i've actually gained about 5 kilos on treatment.  thats cuz i've started eating butter 2 times a day with the riba.  plus a whole lotta meat to make up for the protein requirement.

guys I need all the fat I can get. I thought it was going to be a walk in the park but this morning at 7am went to my PCR blood draw. They took like four gallons of blood ;-) And I won't have the results but next week cause we have 2 holidays this week.. and now I feel totally trashed.

In fact my wife was driving around town doing chores and she left me in the car like a dog with the window barely opened (and the worst part is that I didn't mind. I said just take the keys with ya)... I just wanted to sleep.. I got five calls on my cell and I didn't know what i said... Shoot if this is going to be like this in the next 22 weeks Im fubar  :-(
Plz tell me this will change in a few weeks...

i'll keep posting if I have enough strength to walk to the PC but this IFN Riba may be too much 4 me

I had to laugh at your wife leaving you in the car like a dog. I know the feeling! At one ballgame my husband and I went to, I stayed in the car for three hours with the window opened a bit. Slept, thought about a bus, but no energy. In the end it didnt' even bother me. I was such an active person before tx, thankfully the laying around like a lump on a log doesnt' seem to bother me all that much. It sure would have before tx!

Get a laptop, then you don't have to sit at the computer. My back hurts so much of the time, sitting up for too long bothers me. This laptop I got years ago (well it's a new one now) when I couldn't sit up to finish some college courses. It's great.
