My husband's fibroscan before treatment was 25, a definite diagnosis of cirrhosis. At the end of treatment it was 11.5 and a year after treatment it was 8.5. I'm assuming the score is as good as the person taking it...
Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a new way to image the body. It works by combining MRI imaging with sound waves to create a visual map (elastogram) showing the stiffness of body tissues.
MRE is used to detect hardening of the liver caused by many kinds of chronic liver disease. MRE also has potential as a noninvasive way to diagnose diseases in other parts of the body.
The traditional test for liver fibrosis uses a needle to extract a sample (biopsy) of liver tissue. MRE offers several advantages:
It's noninvasive and generally safer and more comfortable than biopsy is.
It assesses the entire liver, not just the portion of liver tissue that is biopsied or imaged by other noninvasive tests.
It can detect fibrosis at an earlier stage than can other imaging methods.
It's effective in people who are obese or who have fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites).
Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is supposed to be better than fibroscan but nobody seems to mention it.
I'm no expert, but I'll repeat what the department head of the largest university center hospital in Philadelphia told me. The FibroScan results they are getting have been disappointing. The numbers vary, and are particularly problematic with advanced cirrhosis/fatty liver disease. The "gold standard" remains the core liver biopsy, unfortunately. mac
Fibroscan is most accurate in diagnosing cirrhosis it is less accurate in the mid ranges of damage. I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in Jan 2008 I had a fibroscan October 2014 and my score was 27. I would not be concerned with your results as your doctor has advised you fibroscan is just another tool in your doctors tool box used in conjunction with other testing
Good luck
I am from Switzerland Europe and the insurance pays the fibroscan.
I just achieved svr last June after decades of having the disease. I would be interested in getting a fibroscan. Did you pay out of pocket if so how much, or did your insurance pay for it? I live in the mid atlantic region so I would think I would be able to find a place in Philly or Baltimore.
