Fish Oil OK?

Lots of nutrition advice out there, like low iron, Vit. A (unless beta carotene - carrots still ok), etc. How about Fish Oil/Omega 3 fatty acids suppliments? I would assume ok for happy liver?

If you're up to posting it, I'd be most interested in what your other supplements are. If ya don't want to get into it, that's cool too.

Somebody here said fish oil can "thin" the blood. In large quantities it can, and we need fairly large quantities to derive any benefit.
For the reason mentioned above, I take only a couple capsules on the days I don't eat fish. Those pills are huge, can't see myself gulping 8 or so of them down.
Most of the Omega-3 and 6 I get from Flaxseed oil.
Also fish oil is derived from many different fish, usually the ones that have a high mercury content.
I by strictly Salmon oil, which is a fish least contaminated with mercury, even if farm raised.

Hey thanks forsee, all is well that ends well.

I was told yesterday by a pharmacist that fish oil is beneficial particularly liquid fish oil 5 mls a day. Its good for relieving aching joints and for clarity of thought. He said that it is not bad for your liver although I am going to wait until I see my specialist next week (I can almost predict what he will say "there are no studies to show that it is either good or bad")

yes, scott he is on that side of my list also, but the moment he signs; "hope this helps" he is moved to the other side fast!!

I am glad to see you around a bit more, there was a while there when we hardly saw you and I was begining to get worried.

guess this went off topic anyway, (about the fish oil, I have heard and read that you really have to be taking a big amount for these types of effects, as long as you stick to a moderate amount I have heard it is safe, I'm no expert though) anywhoo, just wanted to say I hope you feel better Ina...

I just wanted to comment on the fish oil. I found out it was a blood thinner. So I guess some people could take it. But not all. I don't know your stats. So it might be OK. But my bloodplatelet are under 50 and I have cirrhosis, so I just wanted to add, not everyone should take them depending on how bad your liver is. Have a great day, Debi

I have cirrhosis and my herbalist has me taking omega-3 fish oil along with other supplements. As far as I know it hasn't hurt.

I have enjoyed reading you since being on here and look for your posts. I find you to be very practical with a way of looking at this illness and tx that is needed.
Greenspan and even Bush were great. As I was telling my kids today, If it wasn't for them we would not have such a clearer picture of what we don't need.

My doc knew I was taking it on tx. No probs by him. I like the nordic naturals, orange flavored, my self. Careful if you google it though, you could end up at a site about large breasted norwegiens.

determined to get through this post with no double entendres on forsee eating fish

I think so, if you think it's okay to eat a piece of fish, it's okay to eat a good fish oil supplement, watch where they are caught from though, it should say on the bottle...just my opinion, been taking them for years, cept the days I'm eating fish...
