Fish Oil Study

I've been taking Fish Oil with Omega-3 for over a year with the understanding that it helps Hep C victims. Here is an excerpt along those lines that may shed more light on the subject. It's a clinical trial that's recruiting Hep C victims to evaluate what doctors feel is an added benefit while under treatment.

"The accumulation of fat in the liver has been blamed on a particular type of fat called triglycerides. Fish oil, by reducing a type of fat called VLDL, can lower the triglyceride concentration by as much as 50 percent or more. This study seeks to determine if the administration of fish oil along with standard treatment to patients with Hepatitis C will increase the treatment response rates".

Thanks Magnum I'm going to buy it later today and add it to my regimen of post tx supplements.  Last time I went to the doctors my triglycerides were through the roof and so is my cholesterol.  Never had these old people type problems before and my doctor is livid - since most of the drugs to lower cholesterol say "not for those with liver damage" on the commercials I'd do anything to lower them naturally.

Boy it's getting to be like taking riba again got so many pills to take every day!

Magnum,

I never knew you had JVA.  Wow, you've had so much to deal with in your life.  You are a trooper!   I take fish oil, but just 1 a day.  I buy the cheaper version as I am not working and only get SSDI for income.  I buy the regular strength of it at GNC.  It has done me some good though as my cholesterol remains in the very good range and my trig. are not an issue at all.  I've never been diagnosed w/arthritis, but I have alot of problems presently with fibromyalgia-type of muscular type of aches.  I'm suffering with a torn ligament or tendon in my left knee and since I've been favoring it, the rest of me seems to be hurting in places that aren't injured.  I've scheduled a massage today to see if it will help me in some of these aches.  It's only about the 3rd time in my life I'll have ever gotten a massage as, it's usually not something that my budget will allow.  Anyhow, Magnum, you are an inspiration to us all!   Susan400

I didn't know you have arthritis.  I also have a form of rheumatoid arthritis which started in my mid 20's.  Below is a study I just happened upon while looking something entirely different for Joe.  It helps me a lot if I have a flare up.  It seems to simple to work but it helps a lot.  I can't take much ibuprofen anymore because it causes stomach pain/ irritation after just a few days.  I found this remedy in the nick of time.   Sometimes I take even more fish oil than it states in this study but I just don't know if that would be a good idea with hcv.

Department of Department of Pathology, Londrina State University, Paraná, Brazil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated whether supplementation with olive oil could improve clinical and laboratory parameters of disease activity in patients who had rheumatoid arthritis and were using fish oil supplements. METHODS: Forty-three patients (34 female, 9 male; mean age = 49 +/- 19y) were investigated in a parallel randomized design. Patients were assigned to one of three groups. In addition to their usual medication, the first group (G1) received placebo (soy oil), the second group (G2) received fish oil omega-3 fatty acids (3 g/d), and the third group (G3) received fish oil omega-3 fatty acids (3 g/d) and 9.6 mL of olive oil. Disease activity was measured by clinical and laboratory indicators at the beginning of the study and after 12 and 24 wk. Patients' satisfaction in activities of daily living was also measured. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant improvement (P < 0.05) in G2 and G3 in relation to G1 with respect to joint pain intensity, right and left handgrip strength after 12 and 24 wk, duration of morning stiffness, onset of fatigue, Ritchie's articular index for pain joints after 24 wk, ability to bend down to pick up clothing from the floor, and getting in and out of a car after 24 wk. G3, but not G2, in relation to G1 showed additional improvements with respect to duration of morning stiffness after 12 wk, patient global assessment after 12 and 24 wk, ability to turn faucets on and off after 24 wk, and rheumatoid factor after 24 wk. In addition, G3 showed a significant improvement in patient global assessment in relation to G2 after 12 wk. CONCLUSIONS: Ingestion of fish oil omega-3 fatty acids relieved several clinical parameters used in the present study. However, patients showed a more precocious and accentuated improvement when fish oil supplements were used in combination with olive oil.

Well, my primary care doc has had me on 3600mg of fish oil daily for about the last 10 years for cholesterol. That's three 1200mg caps a day, I scarf them down with breakfast.

Not sure what else it helps, but my cholesterol has been normal since I started taking it.

I've had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis since age three. I didn't know it could also help that. I bought my fish oil at Costco. It’s Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil at 1000mg with natural omega-3, cold pressed, extra virgin. The omega fatty acids are 600mg per capsule, DHA at 220mg, and EPA at 180mg per capsule. Are you saying I should take one a day instead of three a week at this dose?

The container of these 180 softgels (which aren't cheap), says that the wild Alaskan salmon are free of pollutants because they swim freely in the cold pristine waters of Alaska. They are harvested in well managed fisheries - the first and only certified sustainable wild salmon fishery in the world. They recommend two a day. Seems a lot to me. what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Magnum

From what I understand, your body has to work just right to get the good all of the good out of the flax.  I don't remember the scientific explanation but several bodily functions have to line up just right to get all of the impact of the non-fish omega 3's.
I think the flax is still good and I sprinkle some in Joe's oatmeal frequently but I still use the fish oil too.  With Joe  being cirrhotic, I doubt all those bodily functions would be cooperative.
I give him the fish oil at the same time he takes anti-oxidants in case of any rancidity.  I keep the fish oil in the fridge and only buy it from some place that I think is doing a lot of volume business so it hopefully won't be too old. I also keep the flax seed in the fridge because I understand the oils in it go bad easily.  I use to buy it whole and grind it as we use it but I live too far from a health food store now so I buy the ground flax at Walmart and keep it in the fridge.

I have been giving Joe 3 a day.  They use higher doses for people with Rheumatoid arthritis because, from what I understand, it subdues the immune system a bit in cases of auto immunity.   I just brought this up because you probably wouldn't want to take more than the recommended 3 a day  with hep c.  I don't know that for a fact, I'm just thinking from my own limited logic.  If it turned out that the anti inflammatory effect wasn't caused by dampening the immune system then that wouldn't hold up.  Maybe someone else will know more.
The PI we see recommended giving Joe fish oil because it might help with fatigue.  Fish oil and Sam-E are the only supplements they have ever mentioned and I had to dig to get it out of her.
