For those who thought I couldn't do it

My New Year's resolution was to stop drinking. Well,I haven't touched alcohol in 5 days. I had a few people I didn't want to disappoint. My main tower of strength came from one of the moderators on one of the HepC sites who also has HepC. She didn't write me off just because I was drinking, and her and I have become good friends. I decided to detox in my house rather than check into one of those places. I plan on STAYING sober this time. I suppose it's not something you can do until you're ready for it. Now I need to find out what hellish tests they're going to start running through, and I know most doctors want you sober for at least two months before they start running the tests on you.

And I can spot a ***** from the same distance. It'll take more than your feeble attempts to make me fall off the wagon. Now do me a favor and go fly away on your broom!

Myka, don't take this personally, but I think you are a *****! The pills I took and still do take are legally prescribed by my doctor, and I've been taking both for over 10 years for legitimate medical problems I have. I haven't touched alcohol in a week and a half and you come jumping on me for taking medications PRESCRIBED to me? I think not! I'm not sure what anyone else who posts on this site thinks of you, but I think you're suffering from chronic hell-hag syndrome. I think I'm doing quite well without drinking for as long as I have considering I drank a 1.75 liter bottle of vodka every two days for 8 years. Your opinion means nothing to me; and neither do you!

oh yeah, what happens when you stop the pills. when you wake up from that stupor, then what are you going to use. an addict is an addict. alcohol, pills, heroin. you are just replacing one for the other.just like stopping smoking and using chewing tobacco.

I picked a time where I had three days with nothing to do and climbed in bed with my Sinequan and Xanax by my bed, along with lots of bottled water in the fridge. Everytime I woke up I'd go slam down two bottled waters, pop two Sinequan and a Xanax and go back to bed. I've been sober for over a week now. And I'm not encouraging others to detox the way I chose. A hospital setting is a lot safer, but I have two friends who are nurses so the three of us came up with my plan. And I got the name Mordred from the movie "Merlin".

I am so happy to see that YOU made the decision to try. Now that you have decided that, you have to keep your goal in focus. Hopefully it will not be too hard on you. Whenever things got too rough for me and I didn't think I would make it (through tx, that is) I knew that I could always come here to let off steam, cry and whine, *****, and yes ask for a little sympathy too. They have never let me down, didn't always get what I wanted, and didn't always hear what I wanted to hear, but they were always here for me anyways. You found the best place for that. Good luck to you.

What surprised me was the lack of serious dt symptoms. The way I chose to detox was heavily influenced by two of my friends in the medical profession. I won't put down anything they told me or go into details because detoxing is a serious condition, and a hospital is the safest place to detox. At least now my liver can start to repair the damage I've done to it.

Hey I'm praying that it works for you! I know you're not much into that but I remember you saying you appreciated people praying for you. You stay sober and the rest will be a cakewalk, I promise. I didn't quit til my liver failed and I thrived on the tests cuz they were leading me somewhere I could take action against this d___ virus. And I survived the tx. So take care, be positive and know that the future can be awesome! Joni

That's great news!! I'm so pleased for you. I know it's hard to quit a dedicated habit. I never had the drinking, but I swear that quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done (and I've been through childbirth twice with no meds--at least up until they had to do the c-section part...oops, I know too much info).

I'm very impressed. It did not sound like you were going to do this, but now that you have you're proving to yourself and to us that you're made of tough stuff and can do what you set your mind to. Huzzah!!

GOOD FOR YOU, Dude !
I started working out on a Bowflex for my New Years resolution and that has been damn near harder for me than giving up the drinking. Wierd thing is my friends have poked more fum at me for excerising than giving up drinking.  Go figure ?

Tests won't be so bad..mostly blood work.
If you have a liver biopsy that is not as bad as you might think either.

Well good for you Mordred! I am so glad to hear that you quit drinking. You must have a lot of willpower to detox on your own.

I guess the tough part though, can be " staying " sober. You need support and encouragement to keep pressing forward and don't look back. I admire you for making a very wise decision. I am sure it will save your life! Sue
