GGT level of 60

by gallantone, Aug 14, 2006 12:00AM
I've had blood test results back today, and one item has been flagged as needing attention, a GGT level of 60. I don't believe this to be high, I am a moderate drinker, usually wine with meals 3 to 4 times a week. Is this too much alcohol consumption, therefore causing an elevated GGT level?

I think the software that they useat the doctor's surgery is marking this as it's very slightly above the normal limit, but I would like to be reassured that this is not catastrophic.

Elevated GGT could mean just about anything.  Also, there does not seem to be a standard on the measurement range (i.e. norms vary from lab to lab)  For more info see:

Many hepatologists no longer order GGT because it lacks specificity. The esteemed Cleaveland Clinic removed GGT from its liver panel. I believe the same at the liver clinic at Boston's Beth Israel but not 100% sure.
