Gastric By-pass

My son, 22 is 415lbs. He was supposed to have a gastric by pass Setp. 2009
He had some blood work, (not ordered by surgery doctor)  which indicates HCV. We have an appointment with an specialist in Houston on Monday Aug 17 for reconmended treatment.
Any comments?

Will he be able to go ahead with surgery.
I had no sleep since I found out.

hi working, some weight it caused by low thryoid. I have hypothyroidism 20 plus years. But the majority of it, is caused by our eating habits. Once thryoid is checked, doctor can prescribe meds that fit your need. You will feel better if this is what you have. Lot less tired, not feeling cold all the time. Best of luck. ;)

Iam 6yrs post gastric bypass and have had very few problem I started out at 310 and I have gone down to 235 a d Iam. Ow hovering at 255 I am 46yrs now my ? I have had about 6 or 7 bouts of sever acid reflux in 6yrs the latest tonight I wake up at night and cough up the acid take some Pepto and feel better anyone out there have this problem and will this always go on, slightly worried in CT

I am thinking that not only can he probably do the surgery, but it may be better for him to do the surgery and lose some weight before beginning treatment.  Obesity can affect the ability to SVR.  Your specialist will be able to tell you what genotype he has.  Some genotypes respond to treatment more easily than others.  PM me if you want, I'd be interested to know who you're going to see in Houston.  My old doctor moved to Houston and is a hep c specialist there now.

Best of luck to your son with his surgery.  Actually, obesity can lessen his chances of success in treatment for HCV, so it is good that he will have the bariatric surgery.  If and when he eventually treats for HCV (and that is assuming he has HCC, and not just antibodies to it) having a BMI in the normal range will stand him in good stead.

Hi there,

No, the HCV shouldn’t prevent a surgery from occurring. I hope all goes well for your son in that regard. He might want to eventually address the Hep C, though; has anyone discussed this as an option for your son? He should ask for a referral to a live specialist to discuss his options; it might be a good idea to consider treatment after he recovers from the sugery.
