Getting fat on Incivek!!

Getting fat on Incivek!!

OK so here's the scoop - going into my 4th week of triple therapy and can start to feel my clothes getting tighter!  I am a weight conscience freak and this disturbs me.  Eating 60 grams of fat a day is awful for me, first off I don't think I ever ate that much fat in my life (on a daily basis) and second I am hypothyroid so it will be almost impossible to take off once the Vertex drug stops.

Does anyone have ideas on what types of fat to use, I try to go with those that do not include sugar but it is so boring, I need new ideas.  What do y'all eat for your fat before pill meals, and also, do you only eat those meals or more throughout the day/night?

Thanks Sunny

-MONOUNSATURATED FATS !!!! Check out this site: http://nutritiondata.self.com/foods-000032000000000000000.html
-Polyunsaturated Fats
-Try to eliminate as much saturated fats and refined sugar as possible and minimize as much salt/sodium as you can...

Also, incorporate your fat intake with meals... such as two scrambled eggs for breakfast, peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch making smoothies with whole milk and chopped nuts (using a food processor or blender)... suggested snack: avocadoes, nuts (without salt)...

I had the same problem and gained 12 lbs my first two weeks... I made the above changes and have actually lost a couple lbs by the end of my 3rd week... starting my 4th week now!  Keep me posted and if you come across any other ideas let me know! Good luck :)

Just based on what you wrote, Shana, without more detail, I hope you are adding more fat than just the two scrambled eggs for breakfast as they only have 4 gr fat for each egg. Also, make sure that the the whole 20 grams of fat you eat are right before you take the INCIVEK,  I may be reading your post wrong, and if so, then disregard this.

What is really workiing for me is I take my pills aprox 6:30, 2:30 and 10:30 and end up eating about 5 small meals. For example,
6:30--- Greek yogurt ( full fat, 17gr for 6 oz)) with a few blueberries and strawberries
10:30...I start getting hungry again so I eat healthy, low calorie and fat items. Things that I WANT to eat. I love my eggs so I eat them then with a good whole grain toast for fiber
2:30...Pill time....2 oz hummus with pita chips ( 18 gr fat)  OR 1/2 avocado with tomatoes or grilled chicken breast  that I have made up ahead of time. or peanut butter and crackers, whatever works for you.
6:30 - 7:00...dinner time.  What ever I make for dinner, I eat small amounts, knowing that my next fat indulgense is right around the corner.  Also, I'm just not that hungry because I eat every 4 hours.
10:30....usually some type of ice cream treat.  I have several on  hand.  :)

The point for me is that since I have to eat the fat...go HEALTHY as much as possible.  Everthing else that goes in mouth is what I want to eat in order to give me good nutrition for my body to help fight this beast.
I log everything I am eating and I am staying btw 1500 and 1900 calories a day. I need about 1700 to maintain my weight. I haven't gained weight, in fact I lost a pound or two.   I was probably eating more calories before I started paying attention.
The night we went out to eat Mexican....Foget about it....too many calories to count.  Night fat intake was difficult that evening. to say the least.
Good luck... You can do this.

Sorry, I meant 3 scrambled eggs using whole milk... And yes, I have the fat before I take the medication: 6:00 with breakfast, 2:00 with lunch, 10:00 with dessert... Thanks for looking out! :)  And thank you sooooo much for posting your sample daily food journal!  I really struggle with the 6am one and will just grab a bagel and cream cheese or peanut butter toast... I'm going to try out the Greek Yogurt (full fat) for sure!!!
I then have a bowl of cereal between morning and afternoon
For afternoon/lunch pill time I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with whole wheat bread and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, or the scrambled eggs
For dinner I have some of whatever I cook my four year old (I'm a single mom so it's just cooking for me and her)
For dessert I have icecream, yum!  Or 3 double stuf oreo cookies, yum yum!

I also have created a 20g fat protein smoothie:
Blend:
1 cup whole milk
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Whey Powder
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
1 banana
1/4 cup of healthy nut mixture, unsalted (prepared, chopped in food processor or blender)
1 packet of Truvia for sweetness

This smoothie gives me so much energy plus a healthy dose of 20g of fat, and fills me up, to boot!

I hope people post more suggestions because this has been helpful for me as well!!!!!

You sound like you are doing really well now.  Keep it up. You have the information you need now to make great decisions regarding your fat intake. Your protein shake sounds perfect. One thing I see missing in your sample daily diet is VEGGIES.  What's up, girl? (smile)

I will send you some ideas of what I eat through a message when I think of something special.  I think the key is to try and be creative without having to eat the same things over and over again.
Hugs!

I'm glad you started it too. It's easy to get in a rut when you're busy or tired. I eat a lot like Elpasolady n Shanro. I lost weight at first. I look much better n feel like I've put on a few lbs now. An Immersion blender is fast n easy on work days for the shakes. I change up the frozen fruit for fresh sometimes or add yogurt.
I will have to say I'm hooked on those lil candy bars right after lunch. Just one with my nuts n seeds for Incivik.
Someone one here suggested a loaded baked potato. I havent' eaten like that in years and could come to enjoy this... lol. Thanks for the tips. Karen :)

Thanks all of you for the great ideas.  It is easy to get in a rut and then you can't stand to put the food in your mouth.  Keep those ideas coming!

I know I need to have some fat when taking Incivek but I am wondering where the 20 gm of fat recommendation came from.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks, Sherry

I mentioned the weight gain people were having to my dr, he said yes we could gain weight but also said once you are off the incevik and continue with the other two drugs that we would lose that excess weight and to eat what I wanted in moderation as to fat, sugar, salt so on and so forth I don't think I am going to sweat any weight gain while on incivek because will prob lose that and more on riba...And I loooove baked potatoes!

Thank you all so much for sharing, I never realized how much food would equal 20 gms of fat.  I have been on a diabetic diet, this new fat diet is making me sick.
I am doing my best but nuts seems to be the easiest for me right now or an omelet.
I think the 20 gm of fat helps the body to absorb the incivek, I wonder if it also helps it absorb slowly so you don't get as sick.  I am trying to find that information now
Thank you

Thank you.  I knew it was a good thing, just not sure how good it was.  Still having problems going from low fat to high fat.  It seem counter intuitive to staying healthy but then I just tel myself it is ust 12 weeks, I can do this.  I am on anti nausea meds right now which helps

Thanks again,

A good recipe a found on another forum that can be modified for different tastes is:
1 frozen banana cut into chunks
1 c almond milk or soy milk
2 tablespoons almond butter (can be made in food processor at home)
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp honey
5-6 ice cubes
the consistancy is supposed to resemble ice cream. I am waiting to start treatment in mid November and have been investigating diet ideas for the Incivek drug.

Thank you for all the great ideas

I've been advised to begin treament with Incivek in the near future.  But I have been hearing about a new drug going thru FDA testing.  The new drug claims to have a shorter treatment period and fewer side effects.  It could come on the scene as early as 2013.  I'm tempted to hold off and wait for this new drug since I work every day and have my health insurance thru this job.  Any comment?  I'm struggling to make a decision.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It would help people be better able to respond to your inquiry if you would tell us a bit about yourself ... Genotype, how long have you had Hep C, liver bipsy results such as stage and grade, etc. and also your situation (job, insurance, support system, etc.)

In addition, this is a very old thread. If you post a new question (this question) in a new thread more people will see it and respond. Go to near the top of the page and click on the orance rectangle (Post a Question), title your question and ask  it. Hopefully you will get some good responses.
