Going on shot 5, and not sure I can keep going...

Today was the hardest day so far.  It took everything I had just to get dressed this morning.  My arms feel like the weigh 100lbs each, and am totally exuasted.  I feel dizzy when I stand up, and had to go to work to take care of some orders I had pending over the weekend.   Our Head boss had a meeting today with our team, and basically let everyone know that peoples attendance issues are effecting service levels, and stress and extra work on others that work hard and come to work everyday.    I kinda took it personal, but I havent taken any sick time yet this year.  I took 2 floating days when I had my oral surgery, and should have taken more.   Plus I took Monday off because I was not feeling well.  I drank 12 cups of water already today, so know I am not dehydrated.   I feel like my job is in jepordy, and I need my income and my insurance as we all do.   I am top producer, so probably should not take it personal, as she knows what I am going thru right now.  But I did, and then I had a bad call, and at this point, I do not know I can continue working with feeling the way I do today.  Although I am protected by FMLA, I feel threatened by her comments.  There was alot more that she said of course but this is not the place of employment issues.    My next appt with my Hep Doc is next Tuesday.  I just hope I can hold on till then.

My second month was kind of tough for some reason as well.  In fact  I had a couple of weeks in month 2 or 3 that I thought 'If it's gonna be like this, then I'm OUT !!' ( bad bad body aches and headaches ). Eventually they went away for the most part. Keep taking tylenol or ibuprofin. I rotated each of those when I needed a painkiller.

Hang in there.

What you describe is like others who are in the throes of anemia. Anemia is the sometimes rapid drop in hemoglobin whics is usually associated with the riba.  Do you have regular blood tests, a cbc (complete blood count)?  if it's anemia there could be help.

Hi dPerry.  Try your BEST to keep going with the treatment if you can.  If you have FMLA, take it if you believe your performance (or lack of right now)  could put you in a bad spot with the boss or company and possibly cost you your job.  FMLA could be your best safety net right now.  Best of luck.  Let us know how you're doing.

Just got my lab reports back from the doctor as well as my biopsy results that I had requested to receive copies of.  Well out of 3 wks of weekly drawn blood, I only have the one from the 5th, and the one before Biopsy.   So not sure how I am doing now, but in looking at WBC I sure dropped since the biopsy.  I have no idea what the results mean and how to read them to know how I am doing.

I am 1a , biopsy was grade 2/stage 2,  bx done in Oct.
Diagnosis : Chronic hep c with mild activity grade 2, and moderalte portal fibrosis with periportal fibrosis stage 2 mild to moderate steatosis, liver biopsy.

Comment : Trichrome and reticulin stains exhiit moderate portal fibrosis with periportal fibrosis and possible early portal bridging.  There is no definitive portal bridging or parenchymal collapse identified.
A Prussion blue reveals no increase in storage iron.

Oct CBC :
White Blood Cell count  9.6  in range column
red blood cell count     4.72  in range column
Hemoglobin              14.9    "       ""
Platelet count             268

And a bunch of other things I have no idea it had some items out of range :
Absoulte lymphocytes  3917 H
Absolute Monocytes      970  H

Jan 5th : I started treatment Dec 22nd.
CBC :
WBC 4.8
RBC 4.47
Hemoglobin   13.3
Platelet count    131  L   out of range column
Absolute Eosinophils   10 L range

I have no idea how I am doing ???  I am missing lab from the 29th of dec, as well as 12th..  So I have to call to find out where those are so I can see if anything is changing.. Any help on determining what all that means is greatly appreciated.

Man - so sorry to here tx is being rough for you.  Please call your dr. and get checked out - just to make sure.

I have read posts from other folks that say they have "bad" days or a "bad" week - and then they feel more or less ok again.  Hope this happens for you and that you have few future sides.

Try to hang on. It's very hard physically and mentally. It sounds that you have taken pride in your work. When you realize you just can't perform at the same level it's very easy to get down on yourself which aggravates the whole situation. I went through a similiar situation but ended up getting laid off. This was a huge organization and was in the process of big layoffs though. Take it easy on yourself. You might want to talk to your doctor and benefits department for the possibility of long term medical leave. I would document the whole situation for your protection. I can't remember the duration of you tx but for most people the first month or so shows a rapid decline of your rbc's. Even if you are not enemic this rapid decrease really effects you. You may feel better in a couple of weeks, you may not. Try as hard as you can to stay on tx though.
I sure hope you get to feeling better. Keep us posted

that should have been anemia not enemia but anemia is an enemy. How is that for a spelling excuse?
Blank

I understand the spelling thing completley.. I find myself leaving off parts of words, or completely reversin words.. LOL  I have to go back and make corrections.   Luckily for my laptop I am not having to sit at the desk to type, as lifting my arms is a chore and really feel they are weighing me down.
I will talk to my dr next week, as he is on vacation right now and could not talk to him before then if I wanted to.  I wonder if I could get my PCP to put me out of work.

When you get the report from 1/12 take a look at hemoglobin (HGB) which was 13.3 on 1/5 (which was end of week 2). If it's dropped a lot (couple points, or so) it might hint at the start of anemia. I see your platelets had a big drop from pre-tx to week2.  Doc should be able to fax you results or pick them up when you go to see the doc soon.

Did you have any of these problems during your first tx? My two week blood work showed my hemo was dropping, but at the 4 week it was low enough for the procrit. Your doctor is doing weekly labs and you're not getting copies? I had to drive to the dr's to get mine myself, I envy these people who get reports from the lab directly. If your boss did not counsel you alone directly, then there is nothing documented at this point for her to put in your file. I hate when everyone gets a lecture and everyone is wondering if they are the offender or if they're paranoid. Maybe you can talk to her directly? Do you trust her? I have learned the hard way to trust no one when it comes to work but I still want to believe I can. Are you sleeping at night? I know what you mean about feeling bad and feeling like you have to have income and benefits. You need to get ahold of your dr asap. Who knows what 's going on to make you feel so bad but usually the rescue drugs take a while to kick in. Try to stick with tx, your health is more important than a job. You've already tried this once and it doesn't get any easier as we get older with more health problems.
Take care

I do not remember having any days when I could not hardly lift my arms to put on a shirt. I really only remember the worst parts of the last treatment, and that was the weight loss and hair loss.   It was 14 yrs ago, and I was so uninformed, didn't really have internet back then, was just beginning windows that year.. LOL.  But I can remember going to the specialty pharmacy to pick up my meds, and the Nurses there were so happy that I was taking treatment so well, that others do not handle it as well.  I did not realize how serious it was, and that I would always have it.  Getting myself dressed was fun this morning, and was soo close to just calling out.  Then just to walk from my car to the door and half way in, I have to stop and sit down.  by the time I got to my desk, I was totally exausted.  With all the water I take to work and drink everyday, and the trips to the restroom are a long chore. I just took one hour at a time today.   Yes talking to my Big boss is not a problem.  she is actually recovering from a double mascectomy.
So she understands the therapy part.   I have always been able to talk openly with her.  In fact, I got laid off Jan of 04, and 6 months later I emailed her asking for my job back.   I was hired a week later.   It was due to downsizing that I lost my job.  They did not want to lose me either.  But I got the short straw that day.  We now have a union, and I am a Union Steward, but she respects what I have to say and my work ethic.  Says she wishes everyone was like me.. LOL  even asked if they could send me to Ireland to clone me.. LOL  I just laughed.    I don't think I can be her shining star thru this treatment though , and definately dont want to lose my job.  I love my job.  Its just the stress of everything right now is getting to me.  At least I do have help at home.   I could not even gather the garbage together tonight.

Sorry to hear about your plight. I too had a really hard time in the early weeks, still do sometimes. Some days I have energy to get a shower and get dressed and comb my hair (that seems to be a big one!) and then am so worn out from that I plop back in bed. Don't give yourself a hard time about it. It does sound like low HGB to me. I am winded most of the time, but when my Hgb is low, I can't make it across the house. I am not working and only sometimes do I think that I could. I consider this my job right now, getting rid of this virus. Perhaps it would be better to keep your status as high producer and do FLMA, and then return. It really depends on your sx. Sounds like you have some big ones. Don't stop now, it's too hard and doesn't work as well with future tx. It's surprising how fast 48 weeks goes...Next week is a new one and possibly you will feel well enough to go to work, if not don't. Easy to say, I know, but there are ways. After week 20 I began to feel a bit better. It could have been earlier, I know it was when the procrit kicked in for the anemia.

This is no picnic, for sure, but we do it so we can have a longer fruitful life. I am looking forward to the day I can work again.

You have a lot going on right now. First, you were brave enough to start a few days before Christmas. I know that gave you some 3 days weekends but what a hectic time of year. Then you were brave enough to finish dental work, yuck, I won't even go there. Now you are not sleeping, probably have all your bloodwork out of whack and are not able to make all those little fun trips to the toilet as easily as before, much less have energy to do your job! Hope the Lunesta works and you get some much needed rest.
Willows mentioned ritalin. I don't know how it works for people who aren't ADHD like myself, but when I don't take it, I feel worse. I really have to go slow which is hard because my nartural impulse is to move quickly. I have been laid off since last Tues. It's been a real blessing, but gives me too much time to focus on me and not others, which is part of my job that I love. I go back to work tomorrow.
Give yourself a little time to decide what's best. Keep taking the meds as long as you can, maybe you'll get past this low spot. Wishing you all the best,

I forgot to answer all the questions..  I am waking up just about every morning at 3 am.   Cannot go back to sleep. wake up soaking wet sweating. and toss and turn till the alarm goes off at 6, or until I cannot take the tossing anymore.   I guess tonight I will take a Lunesta to see if I can sleep all night.   I have been having a hard time keeping food down.  With the dental issue and seem to have an infection where one of the eye teeth was removed.  I went back to dentist yesterday, so they could check it out and give me more antibiotics, but they said I did not need them.  But the draining makes me nausea, and food makes it worse.
Blank

Do not doubt that tx can make your arms so heavy that they will not go above your head, I remember those days, it used to make me cry to try and comb my short, spikey hair.

You concerned me about your dental issues, I seem to remember someone posting that antibiotics were something to be taken carefully.  Perhaps double check with your doc and then educate your dentist?

You have my respect for continuing to try and work.  I could not and just made a graceful exit.  Never looked back.  But having something worthwhile every day, it becomes a good motivator.  Even after tx.  Good luck to you and honest, I remember getting tired, just trying to comb my hair.

Some docs will prescribe ritalin, but it is a hard place to go.  I tried ritalin, but it made me sicker than trying to work, but it might be worth a try for you.  Talk to the doc.

As the old timers here know I had the worlds worst boss when I started this all - one of the worst people in the universe who made NO secret he wanted me GONE.  Now I work for HIS BOSS.

Just goes to show hang in there and things CAN work out.

Don't wait to go to the doctor - call him NOW.  Get him to write the order for a CBC and go down and get one today.

DONT WAIT.

Tomorrow, call and have them FAX over the test results directly to you. When you see what your hemo is then if it's low you can call him adn say LOOK I can't wait until TUESDAY that is way too far away!

I stopped tx a week ago after being on it for 12 weeks and not responding. In my experience it was very, very hard.  For the last 3 weeks of tx I was practically bed ridden, with all blood counts very low except platlets.  What you are describing is how I felt much of the time.  I really admire people that make it through tx, some people here for 72 weeks and more than once...amazing!! Even though I felt like **** (and still do!!, but not as bad) I would have continued with tx if it was working.  I have had hcv for nearly 20 years now and have had enough!!  Good luck.

Well time to go comb out my mop.. If I can hold my arms up that long.  I got it trimmed on monday..  its still in the middle of my back, but they cut off the dead layer on top and blended it in. and took about 4 inches off the length.   Had me try this new Olive Oil Shampoo and rinse.    A little bit easier to comb in the morning.  Going to take it an hour at a time today, if I feel like I did yesterday, I think I need to come home and rest.  Maybe my PCP can see me, and make that decision.   I see the nurse practioner there and she is soo nice and understanding.  They get copies of all  my labs as well.  I did ask for all of my records, but the lab told me the request has to go thru the dr, and he can send them to me.  So just have to stay on top of the girls in the office.  Well    1 hour, 1 day at a time is how I am going to take this tx this time around.  I did it for 6 mos , 14 years ago.    But don't remember this at all.  It was just Interferon 3 times a week.  no combo treatment.

Have a good day Everyone..

I didn't see it in here (but am at work and can't read eveerything right yet) what is your hemoglobin number right now?  The heaviness and extreme lethargy sure sound like anemia to me. And you are right at the exact spot that it's very common to happen.

You need to get some Procrit or Epogen into you PRONTO.  It takes 2 - 6 weeks to work BUT it's like MAGIC. You won't believe how much better you will feel.

At about the same point my hemo dropped from 15+ to 9 in only six days. My body was so heavy that if I stood up I fainted. My brain felt like it had a weight in it (best way I can say it).

Once I went on the Epo it took a few weeks but...it enabled me to stay on treatment. Without it I definitely couldn't have.

Everyone here encouraged me to hang on...to get the Epogen and give it a little while to work. It was the best advice I ever took

I am now on week 70 of 72 and I can't believe it but I've made it.

If I hadnt listened to everyones advice (even though I didn't want to) I would have quit. But they were right.

Thank you all for you posts.   I really appreciate it.  when I got my labs last nite,   I told mike and was trying to make heads or tails out of comparing the 2 labs I have.   I told him I was going to post it for my friends on the forum, and he said good.   Even went and got the laptop.  I had typed the first post from my desk top, but my arms are like paperweights.

Luckily it was a one pan supper and all I did was put everything in the pan and turn it on.  It was all I could do to stand there long enough.   I too get winded when I feel like I am about to fall out.    I did sleep last night, only woke up at 5.15 for the trip to the restroom. Then not again till the alarm went off at 6 am.  I feel a bit better, tired wise, but arms still heavy.  I got some more orders in yesterday, that I need to process.  So I am going to go in and do them and probably go talk to my boss, and let her know what the stress is doing to me.  I really believe she already sees that happening though, and that may be what part of the conversation was all about, but its one she needs to have with all the rest of the teams as well.

I believe I have to be out sick 5 days then it goes to short term disability, but I need to get my dr to request that leave.  But can't see him till Tuesday, I will have them locate the labs from the 12th and 29th of dec.

Is there anything else on those tests that will say how my fitals or anything else important to my treatment, that I did not post on previous post ?

Does your hair look like a mop too?? My hair is starting to look like an afro! It is soooo hard to comb, the only thing I can do is take a shower and after more gobs come out, I put lots of conditioner on it. Hey, at least you cut your hair! I haven't cut mine since June! I'm afraid they will want to shave it off (my 11 y/o step daughter thinks I should).

I don't have that heaviness in my arms you describe, but I can't lift a firelog or a chicken out of the oven, I am so weak. Are your hands numb?
Blank
12773_tn?1328916786
Ny girl yes hair looks like mop worse than it did before cutting it.. LOL   more curls now..  I had not cut it for over a year.. believe it or not.. it was to my waist.. never had it been that long in my life.. LOL

Hemoglobin was 13.3 on the 5th, just called the dr to find out where the results from the 12 & 29th of dec.   And tell the nurse how bad I am feeling right now.. as I was on the phone, my arms starting tingling and broke out in a sweat.. about to pass out.  they seem to think it could be my sugar, since eating has been a chore lately.  I am eating lunch right now, so it will pass here quickly I am sure.   But she cannot find my chart.. ( cuz they just sent me copies of everything, its buried on someones desk I am sure )  and have the other dr look at the labs and see what he thinks, since my dr is out of town till tuesday.. The day of my appointment.

She told me hemo would need to drop to 30 before needing rescue drugs. And they would refer me to a hematologist at that point.  But that my sugar could be affecting things too.. important for me to eat right.

It does sound like something is going on. My Hgb was 16 before tx and dropped quickly to 11. I felt awful. Had to stop every few steps. Sit on the stairs etc. The procrit helped. If you drop quickly, within a few weeks, this can cause what you are feeling no matter how low the number (which is 10 for many dr's.) Get the referral for the hemotologist now, it's good to have in place when you need them. I went before tx and was so happy afterwards. My dr. wanted me to cut my meds. I called the hemo and he gave me the aranesp that day. Didn't have to cut the meds. Your tingling could be cyro or something. I do have tingling in legs and arms, but it's from an old injury. See if your dr. can check out that too. Your Hgb could have dropped a lot more since 1/5. Mine went FAST. Get another CBC ASAP. You could already be below 10. I don't know what that 30 number is? Platelets?

Yes that was the plateletes, just got off of phone with nurse again, they found the labs from last week.. my  Hemoglobin is 12.6 , dropped from 13 + from the 5th, and my platelets back up to 143 from 131.  she is sending me over for an xray of my chest , due to shortness of breath after walking just from the car into work.  I have to go over there in about an hour.. and they will call the dr if they see any immediate issue there., due to the fact of the oral infection and drainage.   and swallowing when sleeping..ect.    may sure no infection is going to my lungs.   She also told me to call my PCP right away and have them check out my sugar again.  But I left my monitor at work, and I have not been testing it as I should.   I feel to sick to move sometimes and just forget

Good! Do you have a standing order for CBC's? Usually we get these so we don't have to call the dr. everytime we need a CBC. Ask your PCP to send the lab an order. A drop of 2 pts in a few weeks could make you feel pretty bad. My Hgb dropped several pts in a week, that's why I said get another CBC. You shouldn't be feeling so bad. Of course, I have felt bad w/o having anemia... Do you have a fever or anything to suggest infection? I had a chest xray for shortness of breath..it was fine. I still am short of breath..I think it comes with the tx. Things will get better, I didn't think I would make it either and I wasn't working, although I do have a lot to do at home (which has gone by the wayside btw!)

That heaviness of the arms sounds suspicous to me. Get them to run some tests. I'm glad you are on top of it and talking to the dr. I know what you mean about not feeling well enough to eat or take care of yourself. I have felt that way too. Eating? I ate ice cream ONLY for the first 10 weeks. Didn't gain weight either! My appetite is so bad. Sometimes I get hungry and if I don't eat right then, I lose it again. Also I get cravings for certain foods and want only them for awhile....eat those! My theory is that whatever you can get in do it. With you it sounds like the diabeties can be a problem b/c you can't be so cavalier with eating. Find some favorites and stock up on them. Esp. fatty food to take with your Riba.

Well I held for 20 mins ??? and nobody came back to the phone,  I had to leave by then to go to the radiologist for the xray.  It came back negitive.. so everything there is good I guess.  I am going to see how I feel in the morning and try to eat today.  I did have lunch and kept it down.  so let see if I can do dinner too.   I left my sugar monitor at work with my little cooler, but a friend is going to bring that stuff home for me, in case I do not go in tomorrow.

I am starving right now, and steak sounds good..   but can I eat it.. probably not.. LOL  But I am gonna try something,  I am so tired of all the soft food..

I will let you know how I am feeling over the next few days before my visit with dr, and will try to get into PCP tomorrow,   I will call first thing in the morning.
Thanks for all the support.

I am glad you are seeing the dr today. Ask about Cyrogenia (sp) which we get sometimes. Are you diabetic? A HGB drop of 2 pts can cause you to feel really bad. Everyone is different. I thought I was going to keel over. Take it real easy and have them give you another CBC today, your hgb could have dropped in the past 5 days. I was getting mine done at least once a week. Now I am pretty stable with the counts and don't go so often, plus don't need the procrit or the neupogen. Hope you feel better soon!! Let us know what the dr. says.

I won't get to see my doctor today, on a radiologist, who happens to be right next store to my Gastro.  So I may stop in there. but yes I am diabetic, and thats part of the problem, not eating right, in fact my dietician is gonna be pissed when she sees me next thursday, as I was to be keeping a log for 2wks of my sugar levels twice a day, and of what I ate all day for 2 wks.  I have been to sick to even think about eating half the time, and with my teeth, thats been mostly soft stuff anyway, and we all know what kinds of things those are..   jello, pudding, ice cream, soup.. yougart..    all sugar free of course, and protein shakes from time to time, but solid food, forget it..

So since I was 14.9 and now its 12.6.. is that significant enough to make me feel this way ?

Glad you are getting your CBC tomorrow.

I eat steak, have one if this is what you can eat! It won't kill you. Red meat is not supposedly that liver friendly, but sometimes you have to think about what WILL I eat? There are days I wouldn't eat at all if left to a real restrictive diet. I am now off ice cream and eat mostly chicken and fish (when I can eat!), but I do have a steak now and then. Many times only a few bites. Are you having stomach problems too? I have to take Aciphex daily for GERD.

Miss, Do you think she could have a problem with Cryo?

What is cyro ?  At first when I started treatment and with all the soft food it was mostly diareah.   But it started to get better.  Today  I feel like I ate hot spicy food yesterday, and its burning me a new one when I have to go.

I too have Gerd, another thing he is treating me for.    I have constant flem (phlegm) since starting treatment and a horrible taste in my mouth, not a metal taste anymore.. I am wondering if that is just the infection ?    I am taking Nexium for my issues there.  I always feel like something is in the back of my throat, so dr did the scope thing and biopsied my esphoogus (sp)
But no varies or whatever that was.

I go back and forth from constipation to diahrea. The burning wakes me up at night in my stomach. It helps to sit up. I now take 2 pills a day instead of one. Dr. says this is typical on tx.

Cyro: Cryoglobulinemia- I'm gonna type some of this paper I have.... so bear with me!

explains symptoms of muscle and joint aches and pains. Some have tissue damage....

In my 39 weeks I have had lots of good cravings like avacado sandwich with turkey, egg salad sandwich, cheese and apples, soft broccoli, greens, pasta and sauce...I NEVER liked these foods before much. I hated sandwiches and hardly ever eat pasta. You sound like me a bite or two of steak is all I can do. Another funny quirk on tx...you mentioned mouth burning, spicy? Sometimes I can't even eat salt or pepper, it burns my mouth. Anything remotely spicy burns my mouth for hours. Other times I can eat a little spice. Never like spicy food anyway, except horseradish.

I get that type of burning too. Awful huh? Luckily it doesn't happen so often that it is intolerable. What seems to be the case for me is the sx hit me for a few days or so then leave, maybe to come back another day, but they leave me alone. The first weeks were the worst for me. ONce the anemia hit I was going along okay, then boom, it all hit me at once. I remember being in Costco and my daughter in law wanting to call an ambulence cuz' I couldn't make it through. Have you noticed they don't have boxes that you can sit on anymore? This has been really irratating on tx. Sometimes I just need to sit and catch my breath and the boxes are too high and not low like they used to be! LOL

It does get better, hopefully for you too. The more you learn about all this stuff and take things a day at a time, you will be fine. I am looking forward to spelling correctly again, shopping, driving, walking without being worn out....it will happen and I will have SVR! We do have a prize at the end of this ugly picnic.

thank you for all your support today.  I made it thru another day, and feeling better.   We will see what the morning brings, and them tomorrow time for another shot.  This has been the longest week for sx for me so far.     Hope you have a good evening and a better tomorrow.  Getting ready to hit the hay... My GF came by with her fiance and we all bowled on Wii for a game.   I should sleep good tonight.. I swear it wears me out.. LOL

You know what's funny, really NOT, but I talk to a few buddies on tx on the phone and I get worn out. I can only see my shrink for an hour now, while JOhn and I used to go for 2 hrs together. Talking wears me out!??? ONe of those strange but true tx stories. Ya gotta laugh, or else we cry. Me I try to laugh because of how weird all this stuff is. Hope you sleep well! Talk tomorrrow.
