EXACTLY how FLGuy says - it's really nothing except nerve wracking because you just CANT believe that this can be painless, but it is.

Remember you have no nerves in your liver so there really is nothing to have pain about.

:)

Bring a book or make sure the recovery room has a tv (mostly I just went to sleep. They kept me 4 hours afterwards)

You will be fine.

I think you were to have your bx last week.  How did it go?  Were you able to arrange to get the results while your doc was on vacation?

I just had my second. The first was done by an internist who used versed, valium and local anesthetic that numbs down to the liver capsule. The local was moderately painful but tolerable and during the procedure I felt pressure only. I then experienced pain like that associated with bruised ribs for about a week. My second guided biopsy was last week. They used the local anesthetic only (I was upset about that and wanted the versed and valium but they said that it was not necessary and they were right!). This was performed by a radiologist who went in through my upper abdomen. I felt only the sting from the local and pressure from the procedure. After lying on my back for 4 hours, (the worst part) I went home. I was advised to

Hey , its no big deal.My bx was ultrasound guided. The ultra sound part of it is just so they can make sure they arent sticking the bx needle somewhere it shouldn't be. The "staying there" part of it the Kalio mentioned is just so they can make sure your not bleeding and that they haven't done something to hurt you in some other way.

What I thought was interesting , was that we all feel pain in our URC at some time , but when that needle actually punctures your liver , you can really tell. Its a different kind of pain and you can defintaely tell its deep. Its not really that bad of a pain , but its there.

Good luck ohgreat and I'm looking forward to hearing your reaction.

It will be over soon  You and your lump can relax a bit when it's over. Next week you'll be telling other bx virgins how much of a big deal it wasn't.

I agree with Flguy, it will be over before you know it.

I had mine last Thursday.  I guess you missed my note.  Nothing to it.  Hope you brought a magazine or book to read as lying there is boring.

I hope you and your lump are feeling okay now.  I hate to say you have to wait again to hear the results....

It will probably surprise you and be MUCH less awful than you imagine....at least that was my experience. Good Luck!

That was easy!!!  But it was a wonderful experience actually.  My Parents came up to visit me so they came along with my girlfriend who is now free from the treatment center.

Seeing my insides on the ultrasound was really cool.  I saw my portal vein!  The radiologist said it was neat that I knew what that was.  Then she stuck a straw to my ribs and I jumped.. lol.  the straw was to measure the insertion point.

I had an IV drip to get me to relax or something but that catheter in my arm wasnt very relaxing.  Then she jabbed me inbetween my ribs... It was uncofortable, then I heard a metalic clamp.  A couple of seconds later she said, "Hold on, doing it again..."  Repeat.  Then all done!

They even showed me my liver sample.  It was a small pink sliver that looked just like a small fish poop.  Except it was pink which made me happy.

My bed was wheeled into another room where I was moved to another bed.  There was a scrumptiously bland hospital meal. (I hadnt eaten or drinking anything since 9pm the night before)

The vicodine was nice to take away the pain which was comparable to having a cramp in my right side.  like the kind you get when you are out of breath.

I definately got my $2,250 worth.  My lump is not nearly as hard as it used to be either which is strange.  Cant wait to talk to my doctor in a few days find out more of whats going on.
