HBV and smoking

by aharb, Jan 25, 2008 12:53AM
Hello,

I would like to ask if smoking does any damage to my liver.  I know it is bad and I'm trying to quit, but I smoke about 10 cigarrettes a day, will this worsen my conditions of HB.

Many thanks.

Smoking does damage to virtually every organ and your entire vascular system.  You are putting stresses on your body that will impair/impede its ability to fight the HBV.  Do your best to quit.  My PCP insists that not smoking is the single best thing you can do for your health.

Quitting isn't pleasant, but believe me it feels great.

I stopped 3 years ago. It was rough at first, took me about 7 or 8 tries before I could finally stop. But now I don't even think about it. Most people don't feel a big differrence when they stop, but you will have a better quality of life as you get older. Stonger heart, so you can get around. No copd. able to breathe better. less of a chance for Diabetis. Less of a chance for neuropathy ( pain in the extremities). And less work for the Liver.

I stopped the day I started tx 11/23/07 and never looked back. Now if I smell smoke I run the other way! Smells horrible. Im so glad I did have not had one craving for a cigarette.

Of course I encourage everyone to stop, I  only smoked 10 cigarettes a day also. It was 10 to many.

Treatment made me lose many cravings and ciagrettes was one, thank goodness for that.

I'll offer an HepB point of view.  Try your best to quit smoking.  Here's a little logica incentive.  HepB is a DNA virus, it has the abiltiy to mess with your DNA.  That is why people with HepB could get liver cancer WITHOUT cirrohsis.  Smoking will bring a another toxic element into this equation.  Is there a direct causal relationahip?  Who knows, by why take the risk.

They say individuals with unmonitored / untreated HepB has a 25% chance of developing liver cancer.  Here's why it's 25%.  Men are at higher risk at about 40% and women 10%.  You average the 2, you get the 25%.  Now here's the logic (not study, but logic), these studies are mainly based on Asian men who drink and smoke up a storm back in the days.  Not suprisingly, even doctors recognize this, and advise HepB individuals to stop drinking and smoking ASAP.  Maybe all hot air, but maybe not.  Best to play it safe.
