HCV genotype 1 & Alinia

My mom is a chronic HCV carrier, she is genotype 1 (not sure if she is 1a or 1b, will know soon), she is 69 years old and been diagnosed with a severe F3 fibrosis, her vireamia is around 5 million, her platelets getting lower and ALT around 70, her AFP 21.
A few years ago, she tried IFN + RIB combo with no response at all and had terrible side effects, she thought she would die from the treatment... She had to completely stop at 6 months after a few interruptions due to horrible side effects.
What are her chances with Alinia mono therapy, she can not tolerate any interferon, is it worth trying? Did it work with any of you with genotypes 1? Are there any other treatments for genotype 1 not combo-ed with IFN? Best of luck all and thanks in advance.

Thanks evangelin for all the info and hope your husband will do well with his treatment. I might buy her hepatitistechnologies products to stop or regress the fibrosis as suggested by a medhelp member. Thanksagain.

I don't think Alinia is your answer.  I'm so sorry.  My husband has genotype 1 and he used Alinia with the interferon and Ribavirin combo.  It gave him a little bit better response than he'd ever had before, (maybe 10-15 % better by 12 weeks), but it didn't make him a responder.  I don't think it would do anything except possibly cause very bad diarrhea without Peg and Riba.  I wish I had a better answer for you but everything available at this time, which has a chance of working, still involves interferon and Ribavirin.  There is hope of that changing but it is still a few years away.
My husband is generally pretty sick when he takes Peg and Riba but he is going to take it again anyway and this time a new drug called Boceprevir will be added.  The only thing I might add,is that this is my husbands 4th try and he has used all the available interferons.  The Peg-intron was by far the hardest for him.  Pegasys was much more tolerable in his case.  If your mom used Peg-intron, she maybe could try Pegasys with one of the new protease inhibitors.  You have to have a decent interferon response for it to work though.  Hopefully your mom's health will hold out for a non-interferon solution.
I hope something will work out for your mom.
