HGB up to 8.3!

After a week of having the blood transfusion (4 units) , my hgb went up from the 3.6 to 7.9, one week later I tested again and it was 8.3 so finally that might have help and the Procrit is starting to work.

My doctor called me the other days saying is 8.3 over 24...my  wife did't ask or she don't remember what was 24...we know for sure the 8.3 is the hgb, what coud that 24 be? HCT?

Hey congrats on the 8.3, that avg. not enough to win you the gold at the hgb olympics. But might just be good enough for the silver.

No clue what the 24 means, though i heard that number mentioned by my doctor. Something about my IQ. Never did understand that though... Glad to hear you doing better, best of luck to you and the mrs.

The 24 is the HCT. It is approximately 3X the HGB.

great news.  Been following your story ever since you had to leave New Orleans after Katrina.  I am  so glad that you were finally able to get the hgb to a livable level. Now I guess the plan would be to recover from the tx and then decide what to do.  I know your VL is very high, but I don't remember if you had a biopsy done.  Do you know the stage of your liver damage?  I would be interested to know. I am so happy for you.

thanks friole my stage was 4, the great news is that the interferon did some
good and my alt-ast are normal now (!)

I never did get a biopsy but I got Fibrosure instead.
The plan is to do a half dose interferon once a week, once my hgb will be normal,
hopefully soon :) (no  riba)

I've been taking Procrit but my hgb kept on getting lower evenafter I stopped
interferon-reba!  Tonite will be my 8th shot of procrit: once a week 60.000

I'm genotype 1a (?) I think...:)

Glad your feeling better, how often will you get procrit?  I get it every week now at 40,000 units. What is your geno type?

Just wondering --- Did you have a problem with your HGB before doing tx?  Did you have anemia before doing tx?

Hoping a new tx will be out soon that treats you kinder and has no affect on you HGB.

Glad the hmg. has came back! This is a serious sx and hopefully the future hcv. drugs won't be so harsh on our bodies.

I didn't have anemia before TX at all, the problem that due to Katrina I had to change soooo many doctors and I was having probs even getting the interferron/reba, much less keepp my hgb checked periodicallly.

Once I stopped TX my HGB was 10 and kept on dropping even after I started Procrit.

That is strange, Did the Dr. say what caused it? I have Thalassemia anemia and born with it, but after starting procrit my HGB went up.
