Hair Care Regimen

Does anyone think keeping your scalp moisturized might prevent some of the hair breakage seen with tx?  Im guessing your hair falls out due the dryness that occurs with using combination tx.  Not sure....any ideas?

Hair falls out and breaks off. A statin pillow is helpful during sleep.  Moisturize your hair, bush it infrequently and wash no more than 1x week. Don't blow dry either.  And still it will fall out.  I lost almost half my hair in 13 weeks.  It slowly stopped and is growing back.  Only to fall out again when I start tx.

My scalp was very itchy and dry, during tx.  Finally in the last few months, I saw the Dermatologist and he prescribed Flucinonide for my scalp.  Wish that I had done this earlier. It is a clear solution that is easy to apply. This helped the dryness and itching dramatically.   I did loose some hair, not as much as I thought I would.
I agree with with pcds that conditioning your hair will make a difference.  I don't think that your hair falls out due to dryness.  Limit the styling with hot tools like curling irons and keep your hair trimmed.  That may help prevent the breakage.
The dryness is always worse for everyone in the winter from cold dry air and indoor heating.  You may try a humidifier while you are sleeping.  Could really help too.

Yep, the old scalp itch. Mine has gradually faded away at week 15, from a peak at about week 8, but I can't say I don't still enjoy digging my fingernails in now and then.

I tried that washing 1x a week stuff, no way I could stand it. I'd rather scratch a little bit from riba than scratch from "the funk of 40,000 years". I used a little conditioner, and took a benadryl once in a while if it got obnoxious.

Then again, I haven't lost any hair. If anything, I'm having to get it cut more often. So, my case may have been very mild.

The moisturizing will help with the appearance  but unfortunately most of the hair loss is from the root of the hair shaft which isn't even touched by what we put on our hair but is mostly effected by the blood supply and the erector pili muscles that hold the hair in place. I'm on week 37 of tx and my muscle tone has gotten really bad, so I can imagine that those tiny muscles have gotten awfully weak too.

Diane is right, hair falls out of the root but it also breaks.  Deep conditioning and using a satin pillow case may help a bit.
