Hair

by rifleman, Oct 08, 2005 12:00AM
I have been shedding like a dog since I finished tx five weeks ago.  I did 12 weeks peg & riba for geno 2b following the Italian study (12 weeks tx if clear at 4 week PCR).  I didn't start to shed until after tx, but I may have started to even if I had continued for the regular 24 week protocol.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.  I had heard that hair thinned during tx, but grew back like it was on a gorilla post-tx.  Perhaps I am shucking the old stuff in favor of new growth???

Sorry. Your hair only comes back if you complete the 24 weeks. Check the fine print the next time you follow a new study protocol.

I'm a couple weeks post tx, and still waiting for my growth spurt!!! Anyday now, LOL!! As if I'm not under enough stress waiting on the PCR results, we have to wait for our hair to undergo a "rebirth"!!!

And what is even funnier, is have you read the sx's for Peg? It states that only 20% experience "alopecia", thinning of the hair.. Come on, come on....I want to see hands of all those that lost hair! Seems like the insert is misleading!

BTW, speaking of short-course protocols...here's another study using Pegasys (Italian study used Peg Intron.) that suggests 16 weeks has same SVR as 24 weeks in geno 2's who are non-detectible at week 4. For geno 3's, they need to have a low viral load as well for same results. Not sure about the hair issue though.

I'm in week 14 and I just noticed goobs of hair coming out a couple/ few weeks ago. Since you did 12 weeks, right at your ending time is when it usually starts. I wouldn't worry you'll be back to normal in no time.  Congrats

Weight Question:

Many on treatment have weight loss.
Please tell me is this because you don't feel like eating?
Or is it a side effect if you eat as usual or more than usual?
I am week 25 and have developed an obsession for sweet biscuits, although my weight is hanging in at normal.

My caloric intake is about the same or possibly a litle higher than before tx, yet I've lost close to 30 lbs. Others gain weight on tx.  Inteferon is a strange drug.

My taste has been altered in strange ways during tx, and I'm always looking for new things to try. Those sweet biscuits sound real good. :)

I went from 210 to 190 on tx.  I am now maintaining at 195.  If there is anything good about tx, for me it was that I ate all kinds of tasty high fat stuff without getting chunky.  I craved protein after tx.  Might have to do with rebuilding muscle after tx.

My hair has always been very curly - until tx. During tx it was poker straight and it thinned a little but the texture change made it feel like it had thinned a lot. I stopped tx and after a few months it was once again curly and back to normal. Mike

I've lost some hair-comes out in the shower-but no-one including my barber has noticed.
Last time I treated it came back thick and strong with less grey.Just another of the little benefits of chronic HVC.
Put that mirror down now!

I am 8 weeks post treatment. My hair is SO THICK!!!  I almost lost it all now it is better than before, healthy and shiny and wonderful.  It is not pleasant while it happens but just keep the goal in mind and wear a hat.  It is very temporary, maybe every hair that falls means a virus has been zapped.  That thought helped me accept it...

by Micabo, Oct 09, 2005 12:00AM
Sorry, of course I meant to write:  8 months post treatment.

Maybe my mind is not all back yet.  :-)

My hair seems to be growing slower - really.  Has anyone experienced that? I keep it short and get it cut every 4 weeks, but it doesn't seem to need it.  Also the hair on my legs )sorry guys) doesn't seem to be growing as fast.  I know some have said the eyebrows and eyelashes grow a lot longer - well, I haven't seen that yet either.  I am on week 13/48 BTW.  i am finding a few hairs on the counter more than normal, but not enough to get alarmed about yet.

Snook - I think they need a new market survey on that 20%

Now would it really be in the product companies interest to low ball the % of people being affected by sx, and the severity of those affected?

I have long hair that seems to be getting shorter and have been coming out in gobs the last 2 - 3 weeks. I just did #15 tonite. My body hair is also thinning, I actually have bare areas on my legs, by the way I am a guy. My face hair doesn't seem to be coming in as fast, I guess it effects all your hair in one way or another.   Peace
