Hand and Leg Cramp

My cousin is in the hospital for a unknown sickness that causes her right hand to cramp in a fist position for many hours. She can not open her hands by herself. Forcing her hand open is also difficult. After many days of having hand cramp. Her legs have become slightly paralysed. She needs a cane or a wheelchair to get around. She has been in the hospital for 6 days now and they do not know whats wrong with her.

I'm surprised they haven't come up with a diagnosis. We are not doctors here and her symptoms are not related to hepatitis C and advanced liver disease as that should be easy to diagnose.

If she has reduced levels of calcium and magnesium, that can bring on cramping. Lack of vitamin D can cause muscle spasms and cramps in your hands and feet. If she experience cramps while dehydrated, especially after exercising, there is a good chance that is what is triggering the muscle contractions. In these cases, correcting the deficiency will stop the cramps from coming back after you stretch out the muscles.

Unfortunately if it isn't something simple, it could be a symptom of a major disease.
These diseases include kidney failure, hypothyroidism and tetany. Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and multiple sclerosis can all cause hand and foot spasms, which can in turn trigger cramps.

Have they looked for all these diseases?

Best of luck.
