Help with Hep C and diabeties

My husband is diabetic, has Hep C and his ALT is at 116 units and AST at 73,  BIlirubin at .3mg  My husband does not drink or smoke for many years now.  All his kidney function, electrolytes ate within normal range.  Are there actions we can take through exercise or something to bring down his AST and ALT.  Oh and his A1C is at 8.0.  Jay is 55 years of age.  Thanks so much.

I don’t really understand either. I think one of the primary liver enzymes, ALT is less specific to liver injury than the other one. Many things can cause it too increase, one of them being muscle damage. I think it increases in the event of a heart attack too; muscles apparently release several enzymes/proteins when they’re damaged.

I don’t think exercise is bad in any way; but if you have just done a big session of weight training, say; it might not be good to do a liver function test shortly afterward.

Diet and exercise remained key components in diabetes type II management; although sometimes I wish they weren’t :o).

Hi Cindy Kunkielove :o).

Sorry to hear your sister laid that on you; you’ll figure out how to manage somehow still, I’m sure. Good idea regarding the name change; the new one will serve you well. Welcome back, by the way—

Everyone else who responded.  thank you, that really is intereting.  my sister hurt me tonight,, said I could go thru the treatment alone, she's sure many people live alone and are fine.  Never sid she'd come to check on me...again when this dr. deems me whatever , responsible.  I see my psychiatrist onthe 23rd and he knows about the hepc so i'm gonna ask him to refer me.  Ii've been sooo nauseous lately, I want to start this treamtent in th worst way,, the anxiety keeps building in me just waiting for the first of these 3 appts.my family dr. says i must keep b/4 he'll refer me.  BTY for anyone who may remember, I am cindy hamm....i did a search (for the heck of it on bing last pm) and some of my posts here came up with my name in bold print.  So I changed my profile, I was stupid to use my real name in 1st place.  I am now kunkielove!!  Thanks again for all of your knowledge.  I come to this site often but don't post as there is really nothing right now to post.  But the diabetes, being that I'm pre-diabetic and exeercise is interesting.  But no Bill, I'm not one to do much of anything seriously strenuous, thank you guys!!

"Once that is gone he will have an easier time regulating his blood sugar too."

Are you certain?  I cannot recall seeing that and I'm not at all sure that I have had an easier time managing diabetes since SVR. It sounds great and maybe even reasonable so if you have a source I would love to see it.

Yes, I agree that the best way to get those enzymes down is to get rid of the main cause... hep c. Once that is gone he will have an easier time regulating his blood sugar too.

Strenuous exercise can elevate liver enzymes.
I think moderate exercise would not be a problem but I'm not a doctor.

Can't answer why, but I believe Bill is correct about exercise elevating liver enzymes. It is usually a precaution not to have strenuous exercise prior to the tests. I think that it is not that exercise is bad, it just causes an elevation in enzymes. Probably has something to do with the liver's function of storing and releasing glucose on demand. This is just my supposition, so don't take it as gospel.

Hi Bill, why is that?  Why would exercise increase his liver enzymes?  I was recently diagnosed s pre-diabetic and am overweight.  I also crave (but don't always give into the craving as I'm afraid of having diabetes and having to give myself insulin, not to mention the cost of the insulin and the interferon therapy when my Dr. deems me a reliable patient)  just wondering why exercise would I guess,be bad for him?  And possibly for me, once this heatwave is over.  Have a good day, Bill

If anything, exercise would result in further increasing his liver enzymes. He should consider removing the virus, perhaps.

Hi,I’m also diabetic, 55 years old and had Hep C until I successfully completed antiviral therapy. Has your husband considered this route?
