jenna, if you post in the Transplant Forum you will be able to talk with at least two people that have had kidney transplants. One needed a transplant because of Lupus, I think the other one had Hep.C.

I’ll be meeting with a HCV liver/ kidney TP recipient/ survivor today in 2½ hours; do you have any specific questions that I can ask him for you?

I talked to ‘Paul’ earlier today at the HCV support meeting I attend here in town. He received a new liver and kidney due to hepato-renal failure from HCV in 2001, and is doing fairly well. He thinks he might have become infected during his time in the Vietnam war; he was formally diagnosed with HCV in 1994 though.

Since then he has undergone treatment 2 times. The first time was in 1998 with non-pegylated monotherepy, and did not achieve response. The second time he treated was about 60 weeks with PEG-Intron monotherepy only- his renal TP prohibited the use of ribavirin. He was unable to complete his scheduled course of 72 weeks due to the recent death of his wife, and he subsequently relapsed.

Again, he is currently doing fairly well considering the circumstances, and is considering another round of treatment again eventually. I’m not sure if I addressed all your questions; if not, feel free and I’ll try to respond.

Take care,

Bill

Did he get his Liver & Kidney transplant at the same time or seperate transplants ?
I understood from what you wrote that he had the kidney first and then liver but am no sure ..

He received his new liver and kidney at the same time as part of a multiple-organ transplant.

Good luck to you,

Bill
